Pack a tent.  Fly into to Fairbanks and rent a car.  Drive up to the artic circle and then south to Anchorage.  Then head on down to Seward or Homer.  I did this on one trip living out of the car and staying at campgrounds evry now and then and it was a great trip.    I recommend not ever letting your gas get too low because in the right place you can be out of luck if you find yourself needing gas on a Sunday.

That map is misleading. Look at a globe or Google map projection.

That map is misleading. Look at a globe or Google map projection.

It is twice the size of Texas, or you could fit Texas, California and Montana inside Alaska...

It's on my bucket list.  I have wanted to go see Alaska for years and years now!

Gee, the Southern boys keep telling me to stay away.

Just another example of that famed Northern Hospitality, I guess.

Born and raised in SE Alaska. :-)

Also a member of the "pro global warming" bunch. This winter has been mild and zero snow, so awesome! It's a yuuuuge deal!!

Bring on spring!!!

How about directly from the .gov?  You could cut Alaska in half and have two states bigger than Texas (Image from USDA, text from wiki)

Alaska is the largest state in the United States in land area at 663,268 square miles (1,717,856 km2), over twice the size of Texas, the next largest state. Alaska is larger than all but 18 sovereign countries. Counting territorial waters, Alaska is larger than the combined area of the next three largest states: Texas, California, and Montana. It is also larger than the combined area of the 22 smallest U.S. states.

There might be a reason why I drive 9-10 hours to go fishing.

I'd like to go back and spend a month or so in the summer. Just fly from place to place.  I hate winter, so staying is out of the question.

Going to Alaska on vacation this year.  We've never been there, I'm really looking forward to it.  We're going to spend 4 days with the brown bears watching and photographing them.  That's going to be the highlight of our trip I'm sure.  Take a day cruise or two in the Kenai Fjords to see the whales and whatever else nature offers up.  It's probably not in the cards to move up there if we love it. I'm not big on winter weather anyway.

Alaska's tourism ad should read something like this.

Women, are you tired of being a 5 or 6 in the mainland? Come to Alaska where you will easily be a 9 or 10.

Vacationing to Alaska was the best. Took a seaplane from rusts to lake creek for salmon fishing. Awesome time. 3rd week of July is best.

What's you address??

Went up there in '08. Had I not had kids i would have cashed in my plane ticket and stayed.

I'm planning a trip up there now. This time driving. Spend all summer working my way up to Alaska while gold prospecting and metal detecting. I will start at my claim here in Georgia and spend 3-4 months going up and back. Hopefully will have treasure from every state when I get done. Maybe next year or year after that. But have to figure out a way to get fired from my job first. Haha

Do you have any gold creeks you own? I've got all the gear.....

3/20/2016 9:07:53 AM EDT
[#36]
I was born there and most of my relatives are still there in Alaska.

Every time I go back to visit family, its always for a week or two. Wish the job allowed longer vacay times.

I reside in Fairbanks. Known for our bitterly cold winters and hot summers, I can't think of a better place to live. Constitutional carry is great.

Kills me that I'm having to look at moving to the valley/Eagle River at best and the states at worst. Love the summers in Fairbanks but the cold is getting to be bad for me.

I'm not saying it's not big, just not as big as the map in the OP makes it seem.
