If you have a 1 hard drive tower (currently shopping for one)..say 1 Tb SATA drive (as that seems to be in the price range I'm looking at).    How hard to add an SSD drive and migrate the OS to it?

How big an SSD would you recommend?

(No, this isn't a heavy gaming system, just the 'spare' computer, now with a bigger monitor and hooked up to a multifunction laser for some homework for the younger daughter, and for when the other system is occupied downstairs for browsing, etc.).

(I'm looking at options overall, if I'd be served better by a second hard drive instead of an SSD, I can go that route also.....the computer upstairs has Win XP (an old work computer from when we upgraded, but has MS Office installed...but it's got 2 GB installed memory (4 max) and is fairly slow with the new monitor...hence the need for the new tower).

Thanks!

Found it....

Looks like you can't 'migrate' it...you have to install it as a clean install on the SSD, then delete it from the Hard Drive.....probably better to do before transferring personal files, etc...

I originally used a 120GB SSD. I put my os, security software, and a few key programs. I found that it filled up very fast. I currently use a 256GB drive. I would recommend that size as a starting point. Prices seem to be coming down. Get the largest drive that you can afford. Boot-up time is SWEET.

You can clone a bigger HD to a smaller SD as long as the SD have the space.

I used  WD's Acronis True Image. It's free and you can download it from WD.

LifeHack recommend EaseUS Todo Backup.

I figured it would be much easier to install it when the computer first comes in...before moving the old personal files from the older computer and before beginning to use it...
