When I am driving my truck down the road and "step on it" my truck just kinda bogs down. It stays below about 2300rpm and wont go any higher. After it the engine warms up more, it gets better but not how it should be. At first I thought it could be a rev limiter but it if I floor it then let off it starts to speed up and it goes over 2300rpm so I dont think its a rev limiter (governer or whatever ya call it) Then I was thinking it could be some sort of safety thing where it doesnt let it "run hard" till the engine warms up but it still does it even when its around 190ish degrees. The truck is a 1998 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 with 114k miles on it. Its never been beat on as far as I know. I bought it from an older gentle man who lived in the city (Detroit, MI) Tires didnt have a tread with "diggers" so I dont think he did any offroading/muddn. Any thoughts? ![]() thanks |
| When was the last time you changed you fuel filter? I bet that is the problem. When you hit the throttle the filter won't allow enough fuel to flow through so it bogs down. It is only allowing enough flow for lower rpm. It is also a cheap part to start with, when tracking down problems. |
But when I let off after "flooring it" it starts to pick up. Filter are cheap and it probly does need a change so I'll probly do that anyway |
mjpjr is on the right track, and poor fuel pressure/volume would give you these symptoms, and the fact that the engine starts to pick back up after you get off the pedal further solidifies his theory. HOWEVER, usually when a fuel filter is so restricted that you have drivability problems, your fuel pump has already been damaged. Electric fuel pumps are designed to produce more than twice their required operating pressure, with line pressure being reduced by the fuel pressure regulator. There is a good chance you'll end up changing it too. |
So that might explain the extremely loud fuel pump

That is always an indicator - try the filter first, maybe you'll be lucky

Definatly...Hopefully it has just been working harder than its narmal load (but not ruined) and thats why its louder
