My son plans on joining the Corps next year. He just found out that he scored a 79 on the practice ASVAB. What opportunities does that open up for him? |

what exactly does the asvab score? I was told by a recruiter I had an 89. Then another recruiter told me that wasnt my actual score, what does that mean? I wish I knew. I was told I scored highest in my class and the recruiters were all over my balls saying I could do anything I wanted to do. I didn't want to, at the time, and now I'm kind of regretting it. |

There are several ways they score it...if you're talking about an 89 that could be a percentage score....hopefully not a GT score ..... that is a good percentage score and just about all jobs would be available.
I don't know if practice asvabs give you GT scores but you need a 110 GT score to do anything in the army (thats probly around 80% ) |

A year out? He can always take it again.
Buy him the Barron's ASVAB prep book and tell him to get to work. |

i found a way to fail the asvab. You gotta be shitting me. nope. One way is to don't answer. another way is to mark what you know for a fact are Wrong answers. on mine i drew pictures in the answer form, marked all C in one section, flat out refused to take one whole section. making me take the test at 8am my ass. |

I wanted to be a heavy truck mechanic, but that required normal color vision. They said you need to be able to see what color the wiring was. That made sense until I got to my permanant party and noticed that all the wires in my assigned truck were black and numbered with little metal tags.

Could be a fluke, could be how well hes gonna do on the actual test. He may do much better, he may do much worse. That is what opens up opportunities, the actual test. Not the practice. I scored a 73 on the practice and a 96 on actual one... Big difference. |

Did they change the scoring? I honestly ask since in 86 I scored a 132. it only goes to 99 i believe. i scored an 83 on mine. the way they explained it to me was i scored higher than 83 percent of people in recent history... i don't know what they consider recent history though. just as a point of reference with the 83 my GT score was 129... but to the op, if your son scores at least that high on the real test he is pretty much eligible for anything based off score only. there are a ton of things that can disqualify you from certain MOS's though |

I got stuck with recruiting duty from '01 to '05. The practice test is usually fairly accurate as far as gauging a person's general math and thinking around corners ability. (most people I tested actually scored about 5 points higher on the real test)
The practice test doesn't tell you anything about mechanical, electrical, basic science or coding aptitude. That only comes on the real test, and that's where the job opportunities come from. Once the test is taken, then they look at the medical/physical results. They'll look into everything––fear of heights, claustrophobia, hearing, color vision.....doing poorly on any part can limit choices. The #1 thing to remember is that the military––all branches––are hiring for positions they need to fill. If Little Joe only wants to be a pilot, and there's no pilot billets to fill, he'll be offered what's available at the time, or what's expected to be available at ship time. There will be a lot of pressure applied to accept one of those jobs. I used to tell my applicants that they were going to the MEPS to join the military––choose a job from what's offered. You don't go to an employer and demand Position X.....you go and ask for a position. The positions offered all have the same pay, the same benefits, and technical training geared specifically for that job. ***I wasn't a very good recruiter (according to my supervision) but my applicants liked me a lot. I never rarely tried to bullshit anyone. |

This was when I was enlisting, and I felt like a jackass for sending that guy into my recruiter. Nice guy, works hard, but fuck... 9?

Colt 45 guy hit the nail on the head.... it's the score breakdowns that really matter.... What's he looking to do? please PLEASE DO NOT have him go in open contract The boy wants to go 0331. Had to go look this one up. His second choice is 1812, 0331.... he'll enlist to go in as an 0300.... at MOS school he'll have to test into being a machine gunner.... not a bad job as long as he likes to carry some extra weight tell him to stay away from tanks- he'll spend more time fixing the damn things then playing with 'em

There was a guy in my room in BCT who failed the ASVAB twice before passing. He got in the low 20s I think the first time, high teens the second, and then somewhere in the mid to high 20s the third time. He was a really nice guy, but just dumb as a stump.
As someone already said, the max percentile score you can get now is 99. The other sub-scores, I don't know what the max is there. I had over 130 in everything except the GT where I got a 128. |
