My mom drives a 99 oldsmobile silhoutte minivan. Yesterday while she was driving down the road a mans spare tire fell out from under his truck and with cars on both sides she had to hit it. Well it broke the little steering rod deal where it connects to the ball sticking up on the spindle(Ithink its what its called). Anyways the bearings inside the little cup where it sits over the ball broke in about 15 pieces. So my 3 questions 1. whats the name of that rod and the little ball thing its attached too and .2 The ball thing had a nut on the bottom of it but wont come loose and looks like its made into the whole piece and wont budge..should i just keep whacking on it or what. 3. What should that part cost? thanks in advance

Well I'm not up on the latest vernacular of auto mechanics but I think the

little steering rod deal where it connects to the ball sticking up on the spindle
may be a tie rod end. There is a wedge-shaped tool to separate those without

whacking on it or what
.

Get thyself to the nearest good autoparts store and they should be ablt to fix you up. Then go get a front end alignment.

yeah you need a pickle fork, aka tie rod end removal tool to pop the tie rod end off.

BullDogger: It sounds to me you've never done any front end work on a vehicle.  I would recommend that you take it down to a repair facility and have it done right, otherwise if done wrong,  the wheel could fall off.

Head over to the dealer, have them pull the book, and look at the " illustrated parts breakdown " so you can identify the parts, and write down the part numbers.
You can ask them how to get the rod out... and an estimate if they fixed it.

Either order the parts, or head over to the junkyard.
