Ok, so lately I've been thinking about getting back into guitar, and a lot of that is my desire to start playing a 7-string.  I've already decided on a guitar and pickup upgrade, but I have a question about string gauge.  On my 6-strings I use Dean Markley DT strings, 13-16-26-36-46-56.  They feel really good with a stiff pick and everything sounds tighter, not just stuff that's tuned down.  I can't find any 7-string sets that heavy, so I was just gonna use Ernie Ball singles to make my own.  The thing I'm wondering is what gauge should I use for the low-B string?  I was thinking of using a 68 there's really no rhyme or reason why I chose it, just seems like the next logical step.

I've seen people use a .70 for the low B, you might try that.

Eh that might be a little too heavy if hes tuning B standard. Maybe if hes dropping down close to G or something it would be good. I use .68 - .70 on my EIGHT string, 68 being what most factory models come with. Problem with thicker strings that thick is the tone gets a little muddy, especially with chords. Would only be worse on a 7 imo, but i guess it depends on type of music you want to play

Damn...I used a 50 for my low B.  If you want a punchy sound, I found lighter gauge to be better.  I was going more for the Fear Factory tone than say...Korn or the stoner rock sound.

As I stated in your other post, get a set of GHS Zakk Heavy Boomers and add a wound .26 to the set. You'll be quite happy I'm sure!!
