Interesting.......
One question......about how much do the gelatin blocks weigh? I'm just curious......
Link Posted: 1/9/2017 11:10:20 AM EDT
The size I use weighs 25 lbs.

Wow that's pretty good!!!

looks like a 125 grn 300 black out copy

Yes! I might need to get a 7.62x39 now
Link Posted: 1/9/2017 11:24:53 AM EDT
Impresive.

Do you think that this 8M3 would perform the same with a Krink or Draco?
Link Posted: 1/9/2017 11:28:53 AM EDT
8M3 is essentially Russia's answer to the Police / LEO ammo loaded with Hornady TAP bullets.

Video explains this well. The 8M3 bullet dramatically increases the lethality of 7.62x39mm.

Russia can and does use this ammo on terrorists and criminals.

Under international treaties and agreements, 8M3 would not be suitable for "general issue" to all Russian troops (who long ago switched to 5.45x39mm weapons, and who anyway do well with he devastating FMJ "7N6" bullet - which is suitable for general issue).

I really hope SGAmmo makes this a regular offering.

Everybody should have at least one rifle in each by now. If not, chop chop. Salad days.

Without testing, it's purely speculative, but it looks like it could shed some velocity and still fragment. A viewer commented on the watch page for the video that they got fragmentation in water from an AK pistol.

It's interesting. 8m3 has been hard to explain to people. The old Wolf Military Classic used it because the old WMC stuff was loaded by Ulyanovsk Machinery Plant, the joint that created 8m3. UMP, or "Uly" was imported back in the day as "Sapsan".

If you do an archive search in the AK section, there might still be some pictures I took of a 124gr JHP and a 124gr 8m3 JHP that will show the skives inside the jacket of the the 8m3 bullet.
Link Posted: 1/9/2017 1:46:26 PM EDT
Unfortunately, some of the Tula HP also had scoring on the inside of the jacket, but still performed like FMJ, so unless it is labeled 8M3, I'm skeptical.

Wow. I have been trying to get 8m3 for awhile now so I'm excited it is now more availible. But I'm pretty pissed and disappointed because I stocked away a bunch of ammo that may or may not have 8m3 bullets (some of the old Wolf Military Classic 124 gr HP and possibly Tula 124 gr HP, I forget). Now I feel like buying a bunch of this but SGammo doesn't ship everywhere . Woe is me, I'm so conflicted.

They specifically commissioned it so if you want it kept as a regular offering buy up
Link Posted: 1/9/2017 8:12:52 PM EDT
Bought some wolf military classic 124 gr HP back in ~07 that looked significantly different than the 123 gr HP black box wolf. Wider opening, and you can see the scoring on the inside of the jacket. 8M3?

Looks like a good hog hunting round

That was my thought... Much cheaper than buying brass soft point, ballistic tip, or hollow point ammo to fill a 30 round mag for feral pigs.

Wolf military classic 124 gr HP (top) and black box wolf 122 gr HP (bottom) (both from roughly 2007 IIRC)

I'm going to buy some.

Funny, I've got a Hogue grip and fore end a lot like that one for my Saiga. Never got around to putting the fore end on, though. Is a Rhineland arms one.

Picked up 400 rounds for my 527, thanks! Always love your tests btw
Link Posted: 1/9/2017 10:17:12 PM EDT
That looks like a pretty damn effective round for the ol' AK47.
Link Posted: 1/9/2017 10:19:29 PM EDT
That is impressive. I I think I might have to pill the old WASR out of the trash can and dust it off.

As alway - TCB - thanks for posting.  Any chance you can do some 16" vs say 11" SBR comparisons of this and some other popular HD loads for comparison?  Keep up the good work.

The base rifle is a vepr, the fore end is the one bit of furniture I have left as is. A very nice stick of wood.

You could always shoot some of each into a row of water jugs. Water won't give you as much information as gelatin, but it will tell you whether a bullet can fragment. Assuming you can capture the bullet. If you compare to real 8M3, it should be fairly clear what you have.

I was looking for more info on the 8M3 a couple of days ago. Does anyone have a link to the how/why/what behind Uly developing this round?
Link Posted: 1/10/2017 2:10:41 PM EDT
Not that I've seen. I know the original stuff was labeled for hunting on the packaging.

If it was the 1980s, I might agree with you.

It's the end of the 2nd decade of the 21st Century, so I don't.

Fair to assume your gel block material is reusable?

If you carefully reheat it in a double boiler you can get several uses out of it. There is some debate as to the validity of measurements obtained using remelted gelatin, but I calibrate immediately before each test and it certainly has to be more accurate than clear gel at any rate.

I bought a bunch of the Wolf Military Classic 124gr JHP just before they changed. I tested a bunch with water jugs (with and without denim) and saw dramatic fragmentation and 12-16 inches of penetration with every single shot. I've kept it loaded up, and used FMJ for shooting.

It's good to know the 8M3 bullet is back!
