8M3 is essentially Russia's answer to the Police / LEO ammo loaded with Hornady TAP bullets.
Video explains this well. The 8M3 bullet dramatically increases the lethality of 7.62x39mm. Russia can and does use this ammo on terrorists and criminals. Under international treaties and agreements, 8M3 would not be suitable for "general issue" to all Russian troops (who long ago switched to 5.45x39mm weapons, and who anyway do well with he devastating FMJ "7N6" bullet - which is suitable for general issue). |

It's interesting. 8m3 has been hard to explain to people. The old Wolf Military Classic used it because the old WMC stuff was loaded by Ulyanovsk Machinery Plant, the joint that created 8m3. UMP, or "Uly" was imported back in the day as "Sapsan".
If you do an archive search in the AK section, there might still be some pictures I took of a 124gr JHP and a 124gr 8m3 JHP that will show the skives inside the jacket of the the 8m3 bullet. |
Wow. I have been trying to get 8m3 for awhile now so I'm excited it is now more availible. But I'm pretty pissed and disappointed because I stocked away a bunch of ammo that may or may not have 8m3 bullets (some of the old Wolf Military Classic 124 gr HP and possibly Tula 124 gr HP, I forget). Now I feel like buying a bunch of this but SGammo doesn't ship everywhere . Woe is me, I'm so conflicted.

Water won't give you as much information as gelatin, but it will tell you whether a bullet can fragment. Assuming you can capture the bullet. If you compare to real 8M3, it should be fairly clear what you have. |

I bought a bunch of the Wolf Military Classic 124gr JHP just before they changed. I tested a bunch with water jugs (with and without denim) and saw dramatic fragmentation and 12-16 inches of penetration with every single shot. I've kept it loaded up, and used FMJ for shooting.
It's good to know the 8M3 bullet is back! |
