I would have never thought they would release the video THAT quickly. She refused a lawful order by the Constable, she attempted to gain access to her vehicle and she put hands on. I'm not sure how many others would have done the same, but she's no where near as innocent as some make her out to be. She sounds like a real peach to me.

I am already hearing shit about this on TS.

It's a good thing today was my friday, we had 6, count them, 6 edp calls yesterday and after this last TS for today, I am about fresh out of politeness and patience.

Going to shoot tomorrow, steel clanging is relaxing, all will be okay.

The application of the taser probably saved her from any bodily injury.  Pulling on her arms to secure them could lead to injury.  So could any amount of your weight on hers should you have to go to the ground.  The fall from the taser is the safest because she is incapacitated for the moment and cannot use her arms to break the fall.  Having the entire body take the impact is easier on the body.

I don't have a problem with the taser use in this scenario judging by the video.

You must not have seen the follow up interview of the "brass".  They are backing him 100 percent and one went so far as to say that if his mother acted that way he would understand if she were tased!

I have been a TASER instructor for 6 years, I am also a patrol supervisor.

These are the facts folks...Amnesty International and the ACLU have people dedicated to searching every day for any TASER use that they can exploit to their ends.

Their goal is to take them from us and have them banned.

I cringe, and sometimes lose my mind, at some of the deployments that happen.

The device is controversial. Some claim it kills people. I do not believe that but that does not matter.

Perception is reality in the age of 24 hour TV news, the internet, camera phones, etc.

There is the problem of "TASER over dependence" . It is NOT the answer to every problem.

We have to get smart about this or we will lose them as a tool.

Whether or not someone "deserves" it we have to be aware of the perception and the bias against the device.

I am willing to bet that no one would have heard about foul mouth granny getting arrested if the TASER had not been used.

TASER is fighting numerous lawsuits at any given time.

Officers that don't think about these things are adding fuel to the fire.

The courts are becoming more liberal, there are attorneys that have built an entire practice on suing cops and departments, the deck is being stacked against us.

Being sued personally sucks. When your agency leaves you twisting in the wind it sucks even worse.

I have the vicarious liability as an instructor. I am very clear when I teach TASER about policy and the things I mentioned above. My written lesson plan details what I will support.

I can promise you that if you deploy in a questionable or unreasonable scenario you will find yourself alone in the wild with the lawyers nipping at your hide.

It is the nature of police agencies and cities / counties. If you have ever been there you know. If you have not been there trust me when I say you do not want to be.

We had better get smart about this now.

Stay safe.

+1    Even if the brass backs him he ll probably get in some sort of trouble.  He must out weigh the old lady by a hundrend pounds.  You know that will come up in the "sure to be coming civil suit".

The cop haters went berserk in the GD over this.  In her interview with the press, she lied her ass off.  It was a textbook use of the taser.

Thank god my legislature finally did something right....a couple of years ago they removed the requirement to sign citations and infractions....no "more sign the ticket or you get a crim. cite, and when you refuse to sign that I arrest you."

Now it's just, "here ya go" and we check the box "served on violator"....we sign swearing the ticket it correct so that's good enough.
