[ARCHIVED THREAD] - 4473 delay? (Page 1 of 2)

So I go to the gun shop today to pick up a brand new pair of consecutive serial numbered glock 34's that i've been waiting for and to place an order for a Winchester 70 stealth in 308. I fill out the normal 4473 paperwork and after about 5 minutes the guy comes back to me and says I've been delayed. I've never been delayed....ever. He said that quite a few people have been delayed recently, including a cop. I'm sure there are quite a few dealers here. How many delays have you seen recently? I didn't put my social down this time, could that be why? Hell, should I even bother with obtaining a UPIN so this doesn't happen in the future? |
|
Don't bother with the UPIN. The check probably brought up someone with the same name and a criminal history. If you don't have a record, you'll get approved in a day or two.
Putting your social security number will avoid misidentification and could help in the future. |

I see it around 3-4 times per hundred. Some people always get delayed, others are shocked when it happens. I am not sure the rhyme or reasoning behind it, in Texas a concealed handgun license takes the place of NICS.
Edit: I do mine via online NICS, and most are cleared that day or by the next. Its pretty rare to last longer than a day on mine. |
|
I've been delayed once. Never delayed before that, haven't been delayed after that.
I suspect it was because the gun store clerk didn't closely read my application. At the time, I lived in Des Moines, WA. I was born in Des Moines, IA. I suspect he flubbed the latter. |

I've always gotten delayed ever since I bought my first gun. The delays used to be in the 30 to 45 minute range, but in the last couple years, it's 2 or 3 hours. The last purchase a few weeks ago topped them all with a 2 day wait because the whole system in VA went down right after they delayed me.

I understand there are TWO background check "guys" for all of VA. I think they are swamped. |

Also, if you listen to the gun shop owners, Tim Kaine didn't make things easier for those two guys. I've been understanding and patient since the onslaught of firearms sales in the past few years. |

Its the gun show weekends that bog down the FTC. On weekdays when no shows are going on in the state, my checks are approved in under a couple minutes. I don't use a SSN on the forms either. |

Here in PA we use the PICS system... and ironically, it usually only fails or goes down when there is a big gun show somewhere.
I don't get delays very often... and the previous reply was about right. One or two delays every few hundred calls. Since July of last year I've done 700+ background checks. In that time I've had two denied and maybe three delayed with eventual approvals. |

I havent been delayed before i turned 21 and then all the sudden delayed when doing a FFL transfer for a FN PBR rifle, have have been delayed ever since even last week for a stripped lower to finish my 458 socom build...
Im picking up my Socom 16 next week and expecting to be delayed for that too.. and they usually never have a reply so i have to wait the full 3 or 4 days for them to transfer.. its so fucking stupid... Im a US citizen also but im Thai so have a thai name... so im 100% sure my name is not common with someone els... |

I discussed the sole prop route with Josh P, but he insisted I'd be better protected as a LLC and to just deal with the paperwork. There's nothing like calling in to PSP to do a BG check on yourself. |

I thought I was bad. I have an 01/03 and an 07/02 at my location. Both are in the LLC name, so I gotta do paperwork on myself whenever I take something home.
Josh did ours too. One of these days I'll get hooked up with ya and maybe sell some of your stuff. |

Have you logged a handgun out to yourself? If so did you fill out the Pa Application? I was unsure and had not called in to check yet. I do have an Type 7 but just learning the ropes. I formed an LLC. Did it through Legal Zoom. Then went to a CPA for taxes and such and was told they did as good a job for much less then an attorney. |

Its pretty rare to last longer than a day on mine. Here in Connecticut, the State Police serve as the NICS POC for all transactions. I ALWAYS get temp. denied on the automated system, requiring the seller to call a live operator to check the records and issue a proceed. When they contact the live operator at DPS Authorizations without going through the automated system, the only response is to proceed- presumably because the live operator can check into the flag, while the computer simply sees the flag and issues a temp. denial (CSP's verbiage for delayed). |

Just skip the paperwork like the F-troop does
“Please accept this letter in lieu of completing an ATF Form 4473 for the purchase of four (4) CAI, Model Draco, 7.62x39 mm pistols, by Special Agent John Dodson,” read the June 1, 2010, letter. “These aforementioned pistols will be used by Special Agent Dodson in furtherance of performance of his official duties.”

Now, the FFL is in my name not the LLC's. The LLC is for the business. The FFL does not mention the LLC or vice versa. I wonder if that matters. I've bought firearms for myself through the FFL in the past and did the background. It isn't a big deal to me. I may have to give a call in and see what's up with that. I can probably do it as payment back for start up funds. I will look in to that. |
