I think that’s because it doesn’t have an active heated chamber. The next model up (X2D) has one.

I really need to get more knowledgeable about what's out there on a consumer level. My 1st grader daughter has already asked for a 3d printer for Christmas... And I'm a reformed aerospace structures design engineer with a Catia license on my work computer who ran a stratasys 400mc for years.

If you intend to print engineering filaments. Dont settle for less than 350c hotend temp and an active chamber heater. so that's H2D or H2C.

I will get an OnShape account too for actually making items.

Can anyone elaborate on the concerns with the bambu reporting folk to the gubmint?

Me and a buddy were looking to go in on a X2D combo or something similar.

I'm not sure what all I might get into printing but I don't  like the idea of a record of all the stuff I might print...

If I want to buy once and cry once, and don't mind tinkering to some degree, which machine is recommended?

Are the lower tier Prusa worth looking into?

Its a whole bunch of bullshit. There you go. Fully elaborated.

The government doesnt want you printing shooty things. Why the fuck anyone would think China would report you, is beyond all comprehension and common sense. China WANTS you to go against the government, as that advances their agenda in the sense it is another distraction and infighting. When has China ever partnered with the US government? Exactly.

Now, if you want to say they could steal IP or something like that, that is at least an argument worth talking about. I still think its a stupid argument as you can run a Bambu 100% offline like any other printer, but everyone talks about closed source and runs them down the road when Bambu has all the same offline printing capability as any other printer and the only piece of closed source software is the network plug in that interacts with their servers. BBS is open source no different than PS or OS. They also allow custom firmware loads, though frankly its unnecessary as it already comes with the capability people have to flash firmware for in other machines, like a higher hotend temp.

Ultimately its just a bunch of hollaring overblown shinanigans. Not unexpected given the community. Now....could it evolve into more than that? Sure. But right now I'd be a hell of a lot more worried about Josef telling the government about my 2A prints than I would China. Again, thats just common sense in my book.

The argument was that a Chinese company won't report us. Yet, a Chinese company threatened to report us. Bambu is a Chinese company, so why should we not be concerned?

The argument was that Prusa is more likely to report us. Yet, Prusa has not threatened to report us.

All consumer grade 3D printer companies aside from Prusa and maybe Zortrax are Chinese. Maybe there’s another outlier or two.

ETA: Prusa, UltiMaker, Formlabs, Phrozen, LulzBot, Zortrax, Craftbot. All the rest are PRC-based and/or PRC-manufactured.

I wanted easy and just works for the first one. Reduce the number of variables and keep my son's interest. Bambu P1S with AMS2. We've had some failed prints: clogged nozzle, heat creep, variations in filament, but some very successful ones (drawn from scratch parts).

I'm not real interested in printing plastic guns and suppressors. I sold my P80s after the novelty wore off and I have plenty of cans. I am planning to print some Magpul bolt grip cores in PETG though.
Get both is the answer.

After leveling the bed manually after every time you had to fight to get something off of the build plate, and setting the z manually, and adding a glass plate because the bed warped, and when it didn't eat microSD cards.

Going from an Ender 3 to a P1S was like going from a go-kart to a Lexus.

Everybody I've known IRL with an Ender 3 has said "NO, they're really great, mine works just fine!"  Then I ask "what did you mod to get it that way?", and by the time they list every part they replaced... there wasn't much of the original printer any more.

prior to buying my x1c i was a prusa fan. when it was time to upgrade mk mk3s prusa wasn't even in the game anymore. multi head and multi material was a shitshow for them. their existing multi filament solution at the time was a multi year shit show many never were able to make work.

bambu support has been perfectly successful and their online manuals are excellent. parts are cheap and easy to find although i have never really needed to replace anything.

they pretty much just work out of the box. no mods or upgrades needed.

the p1s is an entry hobby level printer. it was not designed for engineering grade filaments but could easily and cheaply be upgraded to run some. it's main drawback was it was limited on the heat side which needs much higher temps. that where you got into the x1-c of that generation.

I have a Qidi Plus 4 and love it, but am dealing with fixing the chamber heater at the moment which was defective but is being warrantied. Qidi makes great printers that are about on par with Bambu. Their newest one has a large print area and they have an even larger one if you need it.

I saw some recent results about print accuracy, and apparently Prusa has THE best, followed by Bambu. I REALLY want a Bambu H2C, but the stance they have taken about their "ecosystem" and the recent accuracy testing I saw would be looking hard at Prusa's tool changer model.

the eco system issue is honestly way overblown. they can easily be used with other slicers and lan mode like anything else.

print accuracy in reality is damn close to the same and the h series can be improved down to under 5μm resolution with the encoder plate tuning and engineering filaments. neither of which anyones eyball will be able to tell the difference. for prototyping or production design either are acceptable. if you need better than this you need an industrial printer not a consumer model.

both are good options. jmho i feel the bambu is significantly more refined as a comsumer printer.

It's 2026, just about any printer you can buy is going to just work.  My 5+ year old Mk3 just works, every time. My Core Ones just work, every time. My Vision Miner just works. Once you start printing materials that aren't PLA then you need to do material tuning and manual tweaking. Go look at the 3D suppressors thread in the 3DP subforum and look at all the issues the Bambus are having with printing PA6.

My K1 Max just works. Of course, the guy I bought it from for $150 got rid of it because it had a melty blob and threw away the heat sink. I put a $7 heat sink in it and haven’t had a single issue since then. The damn thing just prints

I am told that it is tradition to print a bunch of parts for the printer itself, and then never print anything else with it ever again. I would hate to heedlessly destroy tradition.

I've spent 3 days printing parts for my voron just to change the color
Once you realize that all power comes from the credible threat of the use of deadly force, and the gov't hates you, most things become easy to understand..

Seemed wrong to have two orange ones. And black is boring.

The owners of those 10% of Enders swear that all 100% of Ender 3’s work 100% of the time
