Been wanting a new truck and do love my old Toyota but god - how did they get this so wrong? https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2026/05/second-toyota-tundra-engine-recall-postponed-again-because-company-incredibly-still-doesnt-have-a-fix-after-4-years/ Toyota’s reputation for quality continues taking hits as the automaker has for the second time in four years forced owners of more than 125,000 late model Toyota Tundras and Lexus GX and LX SUVs to wait for a solution to the Toyota Tundra engine recall debacle. |
|
Its unfortunate. They've really damaged their reputation with this engine. I like the Tundra and the F150 with the 3.5EcoBoost engine. The Tundra with their engine disaster and Ford with their cam phasers that apparently they still cant get straight 10 years later. I think I stick with my old Ford F250 Diesel which has never seen the inside of the shop or dealership since I drove it off the lot 20 years ago. |

Quoted: Toyota really seems to have trouble with turbocharged truck engines. |
|
Quoted: Does Toyota have the owners of the trucks with blown engines in a loaner? Im bewildered more than anything at this point. It's not as if Toyota hasn't had interludes in the past - mostly in the GD Quality Golden age of the late 90s early 2000s. Head gaskets, the AZ head studs like GM NorthStar (hiyas Time-Sert) - those also had the unrelated oil consumption that got new pistons to remedy, if you met threshold. 4GR was a shitshow with a 9 year unlimited warranty to make right after positions there as well. The oil sludging - tho much of the industry did.Global turbo diesels with cracked pistons - poor emissions implementation. Shit the V8s and V6s had valves springs fail (recall) and just before COViD60k hybrid blocks weren't cooled correctly and got recall There's plenty prior. So not a unique situation. I guess the sky was falling at each. Mostly its manufactured story that resonates due to the juxtaposition of the issue and constructed bulletproof rep. Which really never was. So buy Toyota without concern. Tho not the V35A yet. No don't buy that |
|
Quoted: Toyota really seems to have trouble with turbocharged truck engines. This engine really. They have been making stupidly reliable ones for decades. Their best bet for the Tundra is to figure out a real fix, deal with it like the 1st gen Taco frame issue, trade in's get a large premium for trade in and replace the engine mid run with a more reliable one. I think this engine has enough of a bad reputation that it's going to be maligned forever. [I also understand and am not blaming new customers or owners for that reputation, it is Toyota's blame alone] Of course I laughed my ass off at the 3.5 replacement for the 4.0 in the Taco because they had a FAR better engine already that could have pulled the same mileage in the newer FJ Cruiser/4 Runner 4.0 VVTi that had cam timing on both intake and exhaust sides. More power, smoother and with a proper transmission gear ratio, it could have pulled fuel economy numbers as well as the 3.5. I had that engine for a couple years in a 2014 FJC, it was a very nice engine. |
|
Who would have thought increasing the stress in smaller engines to make them perform like larger ones would cause problems. I am rocking my 2013 Lexus GS with the bulletproof NA 6-cylinder and my 2015 Frontier with the 4 liter 6 until they die on the side of the road. |

They have a fix it's called a 5.7 Put it in a 3/4 ton make it a "farm" truck |
|
Quoted: What's your reliable car brand pick? It's pick your poison right now. Ram has the best trans (ZF8) and the 5.7 hemi is solid (hemi tick keeping it from being exceptional), but prone to electrical / sensor issues. Ford and Chevy lean on the same 10 speed trans, and it's not the best unit - shifting issues and wear problems. GMs engines have lots of issues (especially the 6.2L). But they're better with electronics. And we're already discussing Toyota's shortcomings |

Will never get rid of it at this point. Bought it new and it has been 100% solid. |

Ford has been having CAM phaser and tensioner issues since 2004. 22 years and counting. |
|
Quoted: Who would have thought increasing the stress in smaller engines to make them perform like larger ones would cause problems. The problem is a manufacturing process issue, not the design of the engine. They left chips from machining in a lot of blocks and later they dislodge and eat the engine. |

Quoted: They need to just go back to the air aspirated 4, 6 & 8 cylinder engines that work Like the GRs that leak at the timing chain cover. I've out of pocket resealed two. Low incidence, but I've drawn the short straw twice - once below 30kmwhuch may have been contributory. It took them 3 years to fix the 1GR head gasket issues. 3VZ is notorious - so mud so Deerhurst claims every 3.0L V6 in the industry was avoided by buyers. 4GR - Attached File Took a bit to start piston exchanges. Then the 9 year warranty I mentioned. If you ask me it never got right. The V8s are mostly solid despite the valves springs, timing system and cam tower leaks on some. This is more a memory and expectational issue than other mfgs face. |

That is what they are saying but I am not sure I believe that is 100% of the issue. If it was then the "fix" is easy which apparently isn't the case. It might well also be that a lot of that foreign matter is the result of the engines eating themselves. |
|
Quoted: Are the 4 banger turbos in the tacos and 4Runners holding up? According to our service guy at Toyota , his advice was to avoid them. This was backed up by two techs at Toyota I know as well as two independent mechanics I know as well. When I take our vehicles in for oil changes ( free oil changes for life deals) I look around the lot at used vehicles. There are an alarming number of the Turbo Tacos ( 2024 and newer)with low miles and almost never any of the pre-turbo trucks on the lot. |

Hey man, you are the one that went on a tirade about how the SMOD was the worst thing to ever happen in the automotive industry and yet here you are with a pretty good list of massive issues Toyota has had and in a thread about how the engine failures are so bad there isn't even enough motors to replace the blown ones causing a delayed recall to save face. I guess Toyota can now play in the camp that everyone else does. Small, boosted, shitty motors. Appears only Ford can make one that is halfway decent. I'll let you go ahead and make up things that were not actually said if it makes you feel better. |

The problem is a manufacturing process issue, not the design of the engine. They left chips from machining in a lot of blocks and later they dislodge and eat the engine. It may have been part of the issue initially but I think there is another larger one Toyota can't figure out and it's frustrating the hell out of them. Be it improper heat treating of some part/s, lube flow issues, thrust bearing problems that are bad enough to ruin parts and create metal fragments, what ever it is, it's more then some chips left in the newer and replacement engines after manufacturing. I have no doubt Toyota changed the cleaning and flushing process a long time ago and issues remain. |

If only the president would fix the EPA and CAFE |

Sequoias and GX550's are having the issue as well. The guy who does my wheels and tires, his wife's Sequoia is in for an engine replacement and his neighbor's GX is having the issues. Quoted: Are the 4 banger turbos in the tacos and 4Runners holding up? Taco's had some tranny issues, so far the 4R seems to be doing fine. If this is because the Taco came out before the LC/4R or because the Taco is made in Mexico, I dunno. |

But not because it iron, it's a UZ in Cruiser and it has a belt. Bodine did the Lex and UR aluminum blocks fine tho AMD (Car Care Nut) think all the head gaskets will fail, warp your blaock heads and ruin the engine. Overblown. But change coolant least every 75k, if a top synthetic can prolly go 10k interval OCI and you can get a million out. Vic Sheppard did in his second million mile Tundra tho, lost his transmission around 800k. There's a lot out there over 500k. Thry will leak at the cam towers so watch that. Attached File URs will do it no problem. But there's quite a few V35A out there encroaching 250k. They qualify for the recall replacement anyway, I'm not sure I'd do it ![]() |

Quality Reliability Durability isnt a given, it's a struggle. The question isn't who doesn't have problems. It's where can I have the best chance at avoiding (it's a numbers game) and who do I trust when I do. Toyota did a very good job of no bullshit report to remedy time. They've been pretty transparent and mostly generous. It's a recall not a program. Tho I think they have more issues than debris, won't know until the 2027 revision is parsed. |

Quoted: Just think of all the extra fuel expended due EPA standards causing auto makers to make shit engines to meet the standards. Extra engines and parts having to be manufactured and transported for installation. They cheaped out on their bottom end. Not exactly the epas fault. Them having to design a new engine is the epas fault though. But they can use these engines worldwide once they redesign the block lol. |
