What is the consensus on the best type of gun for home defense. I currently use a Remington 870 and a 9mm baby desert eagle. I live in suburbia so most of my encounters with two legged predators will be inside my home. I have no ranch to patrol so I leave my rifles in the safe. I was thinking of getting a .45 cal handgun with a light or a large revolver. What do you guys think is best?

What you have should be adequate for suburbia.  DK-Prof has a point though.  I would suggest you replace the pistol with either a .45, .357, or .44.

870 with buck shot will take care of your average "Homo Sapian Americana Brigandian" IE "atypical urban hard ass" including
but not limited to coke head, crack head, meth head, huffer, pimpus magnumus and the random "duster"  Keeping in mind
the Duster" may need a movement towards slugs, with the prudent use of the 9mm for the occasional coup d grace of the undead...

I use an 870, 1911 .45 for night time bumps in the night and an AR for day light rambling
but I live on 30 acres.
