8.22/2196.67 Last night I Signed up for a race that will take place this Saturday. It is a 4 hour time limit, on a 1 mile loop, through the trails at the local forest preserve. 300’ of gain per mile. For this course and race the record is 21 loops. |

4.1 / 2,345 Still recovering from that bug, but I am feeling a good deal better. My kid's extra-curricular activities this weekend require that I have them places during when I would usually be running, so perhaps cutting back over the weekend will be best and let me go at it hard again next week. |

6.00 / 1200.01 Easy run. Tried out a pair of Brooks Ghost 18's just to have another option in the easy run rotation. I'll be returning these to Fleet Feet for an exchange. Felt like I was running in wooden clogs. Heavy, stiff, unresponsive. At least the Glycerins I've had have been more cushioned and responsive even if heavy. My other easy run shoe is the Azura. It's certainly lighter and more responsive, but the speed roll rocker can get annoying after about 7-8 miles (IMHO). |

They turn over extremely fast, like my Edge Tokyo's do, but are more stable everywhere. Very fun shoe, faster than any super trainer ive tried. Ill keep testing them out, but they might be awesome for a few hrs at MP or even for my marathon next year. Who knows. |

17.4/2217.11 For the 1 mile loop FKT the previous record was 9:29. I won the “Freak fast mile” today with a time of 9:35, darn. Due to me signing up for this race last minute I did not do my normal prep during the week prior. I usually like to chug water like it’s nobody’s business. I’m talking 1 to 1.5 gallons of water a day even adding in lots of salt. And, I paid for it today within this 1 mile loop that is 300 feet of gain per mile. There is a spillway that we climb up and I died in the middle of that spillway at about 11 I could not move without my leg severely cramping ended up in taking eight total element packs plus one element drink so that was 8500 g of sodium. Had some lays chips. I was going back-and-forth with his kid coming out of the aid station. I would pass him that he would pass me. I ended up getting the most loops which was 17. Now the reason my distance today shows 17.44 was due to me going to my truck wants to get more water also more element packs. I also bearded off the Trail ones for about .2 miles. Got over 5000 feet of Gehn and it was nice and humid today. I want a Phoenix headlamp free IPAs and a $50 gift card to Jimmy John’s. Good start to a Saturday. |

The new Yogiris (never tried the old S4+ model) are the opposite. Fast enough for me to hit any pace Im capable of but they dont punish me when Im worn out and my form is garbage. |

9.0 / 1226.0 Plan called for 9 at 'medium' pace about halfway between easy and threshold. Felt odd at first to run in that range, but I could see the benefit of starting to increase pace for longer runs. Late afternoon runs starting about an hour before the sun goes down are working out well. |

43.45/456.68 8/30 3.01 8/31 3.01 9/2 3.11 9/3 3.00 9/7 morning 4.16 9/7 evening 3.02 9/9 3.02 9/11 3.00 9/15 7.96 9/16 6.13 9/18 4.03 Still getting at it but PF in my right heel is slowing me down. It’s improving but very slowly. I’m probably going to shut it down after next week to give it time to recover for our vacation in the Smokey’s at the end of October. We have plenty of trails to hike that week. 9/15 and 9/16 were definitely different. We did North Dearborn to the Navy Pier and surrounding area. First time jogging a big city. Some of the things we saw on those runs cannot be unseen lol. This old Cajun was definitely out of his element |

Everybody wanted a piece of my trail today, i guess. |

18 / 2,419 My longest run in... a very long time. Likely for a year or so. Ran with the HS's #3 runner. He has been having some issues on the mental side of racing performance and wanted some advice. I also learned that I'd be the #5 guy on the team by current 5k fitness! |

After this morning it looks like that downward swing may have bottomed up and started rising again but that remains to be seen. Cooler weather is on the way next week (days with highs the same as or only a couple degrees higher than lows have been recently) and I might take advantage of this by doing a 5,000m time trial on the track on the best weather day possible (looks to be Wednesday). https://i.postimg.cc/28d8rRR6/image.png I really need to sign up for that runalyze so I can geek out on the data. Regardless, I find it frustrating sometimes to look at the Garmin VO2 max prediction. What's even more comical are my race predictions. Anyway, my VO2max bottomed out in April after I improved my 5k time. Since then it has actually shown an upward trend. Anyway hat tip for posting the challenging times also. I think everyone knows that it's not lack of effort on your part. Everything in moderation. Don't let the highs be too high nor the lows too low. |

12.0 / 1255.0 Due to a pet emergency last night I got to bed late and slept poorly. Got up later than usual and hit the trail later also. The heat beat me down and it was a challenge to stay in zone 2. Will definitely try to get to bed early tonite |

I'm considering a few 5k's coming up. 2 on 10/3 for Oktoberfest. One has a weiner dog race! |

I figured id slow down, but I didnt realize how much of my endurance it took from me when my HR was high. Its good, i guess, because it taught me to swap speed for time. I finally became comfortable with some of the slower paces and it allowed me to add in mileage I couldnt before. I can do a 40 or even 50 mile week right now when the 25 mile weeks used to eat up every bit of my recovery. So anyway, that VO2 max score for me had steadily dropped week by week, even though I can run farther and I have PR'd my short distances (1 mile, 5k and 10k ) in the worst of the summer heat. I know my fitness is better now than 6 months ago. But that algorithm says my running has gone to shit. I was curious to see if it thinks the same about alot of people during the summer. They should figure out a way to factor in heat. Even for you guys, a steady 9 or 10 minute pace over a long run with a lower heart rate than last year, in 100 degree heat, should indicate something that they can pick up on. Looking at the chart below, you can see exactly when I started doing long runs and more mileage at slower paces. Attached File |

Speaking of race predictions and Vo2 max, My hill repeats analytics make me look like I’m in terrible shape. Marathon prediction time has climbed and climbed but so has my total ascent for the last month or so. Yes my pace is 10:30-10:45, yes my avg HR is 146, but also yes I gained 2700’ of vert in 11 miles today with never leaving my property. That’s .05 mile up hill, .05 mile down hill. Around 224 up-and-backs with never leaving my property. Humble brag got a good work out in but shamelessly can admit I’m slow and I’m ok with it. 11/2276.53 15,279’ gain for the month so far-hoping to reach 26,000+ for the month of September. |

It does heavily use a ratio of HR (likely as a percentage of HRmax or HR Reserve) to pace, which is really affected by heat. Supposedly for the past few years they do something to adjust for heat, but I haven't really ever noticed that. The frustrating thing about this is that there have been times when the time predictions have been spot on for me. Literally within seconds of real race finish times, but then something gets tweaked with the algorithms and they're off again. Currently my 5k predicted time is 19:05, which is completely laughable. Temperatures are finally starting to fall around here, so that VO2Max estimate should be on its way back up. Hill repeats are will absolutely tank that number. You end up doing your hard work going uphill (which is much slower than the same effort would be on flats) and your HR lags behind that somewhat. So by the time you finish and turn the effort/pace way down for the recovery your HR finally catches up and peaks. So those peak HR number coinciding with some of your slowest paces causes issues. Side note: This sounds like my ultra training from a few years ago. I did multiple 18-20 mile runs up and down a 1/4 mile long hill. |
