So my brother brought me his Cavalier with some transmission issues. Build date 10/99, 2.2L, auto trans. Has some trouble shifting out of first. Sometimes it does, but then I cannot get it to shift out of second. Won't go above 30mph (But then again, I know the speedo is off by 10-ish mph. Related, I don't know? ).

Scanned it for codes, nothing comes up. I changed the fluid and filter, it was overfilled by a couple quarts but the problem is still there. Found a broken wire going into the trans, fixed it but the problem is still there. Also found oil in a connector, haven't found the source of the oil yet.

Any ideas guys? Want to do everything I can before I recommend him a transmission shop.

Will the transmission shift manually? Start by putting it in first gear then shift up to second gear, then drive etc..to see if it works that way.

Your problem is not the transmission......... It's that you have a Cavalier. Burn it ans get a decent ride

I had a 2001 Cavalier that did the same thing. The auto transmission that GM used in their 4 cylinder front wheel drive cars from 2000- 2004 were junk. It is most likely that the valve body went out (or is going out). I have seen all makes/models of GM cars with the same transmission from those years have problem. My suggestion is to get rid of the car or replace the auto with a manual.
