Ok, my son got the Camaro from Grandma and Grandpa and our mechanic took off some sort of timing chain belt cover on the front of the engine and found water leaking down there. He changed it out and tested it for a day and seemed ok. I drove it to work this morning about 25 miles and it was fine. The oil was golden this morning when I left and the radiator was full. No problems all the way to work. This evening when I drove home it raised the temp guage as high as it can go with out actually being in the orange danger zone, but it did not do this till the last 3 or 4 miles of the 25 mile drive home. We let it sit and cool off and when we checked the coolant it was low and we added about 1/2 a qt. Then we turned it over and let it run for a min and then let it sit. Then we checked the coolant and needed to add another 1/2 qt. The oil is still golden clean and there is no visible leaks in the engine area or on the ground under it. Any thoughts? |
| normally the timing chain cover is sealed so if coolent is in there that aint a good sign and you said the oil is golden? is that the color or just a figure of speech, oil should be blackish in color and if it has a milky white color in it the engins is blown. sounds almost like a bad head gasket letting the coolent burn off in the piston |

The oil is golden clear like it is when it comes out of the bottle. Nothing dripping or steaming from the exhaust. We just got back from about 25 miles of running it around hard and it seems fine. No overheating or anything. I will check the coolant and oil in the morning when it is cool and light outside. Maybe there was just excess air in the radiator and maybe the thermostat was just sticking and thats why it was getting so hot this afternoon. Could I be that lucky?!?!?! I doubt it but its nice to dream. |
ditto this, camaros of this vintage are set so that the highest point is not the radiator, there is a bleeder screw on the housing that the water pump, just keep an eye on the temp |
