So my buddy is set on getting a 1911 for his first handgun, but he can't decide if he wants a Colt or a Springfeild, both recently made but years are unknown.

Any important info on either?

Thanks!!

I shot my friend's Springfield 1911s, they are pretty decent. If you want a shooter and on a budget go with Springfield. However you will retain the value of your gun longer with a Colt. I have a Colt Delta Gold Cup, and today I can sell it for more than what I paid for it. It is nice to know that  you can shoot a gun for awhile and at least recoup your cost of the gun, of course only if you plan to sell it.

Have him save up and get a Springfield TRP. I have a Springfield Loaded and a Colt series 80 also. I am thinking about selling the Colt and the Loaded now that I have the TRP.

How much money dose he want to spend on a 1911?

I concur with this as another owner of both.  Colt American steel wins over Brazilian steel assembled in the US every time.

Get neither. Save up and buy a premium 1911 from Wilson, Nighthawk, RRA, Brown, or such as that.

This owner of 3 SA 1911's wishes he'd done that years ago.

Has NorCal_LEO ever been wrong about someone being familiar?

That would suck if I got familiarized and it was some big mistake; like really it should have been a guy name LINTTICKLR.  Is there an appeals process that the arfcommer can go through to regain his rights?  Can this person retain counsel?

Springfield.  Just based on my experience the quality is BETTER as is the customer service.  I paid for the Colt name TWICE - it wasn't worth it either time.

First one threw its front sight at the range and the second was a total jam-o-matic.  Of the three Springers I owned one was a POS but SA customer service shipped it back and forth three times on their dime and eventually shipped me a new gun - better than the gun in question.

No contest.

I wonder if Nor Cal bans them immediately, or lets them have that OH SHIT moment before getting the hammer.

My SA 1911's are actually very reliable....but so is a $10 watch from wal-mart. For those who appreciate watches, though, it just wouldn't be an option.

I have a Colt Combat Elite and a Springfield Loaded.

The trigger on the Springfield was terrible until I had EGW do a trigger job and a barrel bushing.  I have around 7,000 rounds through this gun in the past 4 years.  The gun has never jammed or failed in any way.

The trigger on the Colt is acceptable, but not great. I have about 1,500 rounds through this one, and it works 100% as well.

Accuracy is pretty close, with the Springfield being slightly better.  I have replaced the mainspring housings on both guns, the Colt because it's plastic and the Springfield because of that lock that it has.  Neither part ever failed, I just didn't like them.

I'd go with the Colt if I had to choose between two new ones.  My Springfield is a better gun than my Colt is, but stock vs. stock the Colt had a better trigger, accuracy is comparable and the Colt will hold its value better than any other 1911.

Which Colt should I conduct your awesome experiment with? Original 1918? Series 70 GCNM? 1991?
