Why should you make time for training? In regards to leadership and emergency hard skills training, why should you spend money and precious hours or days away from family and loved ones to develop and hone skills which seem only applicable to your life on the periphery of reality? It is an imperative of an individualistic free society, particularly one that wishes to remain so, that the men and women of that society recognize when group effort is in the best interest of them as individuals. Failure to acknowledge and take actions in preparation for when unified group efforts are requisite for a desirable long term outcome, results in erosion and loss of the individuals (and their families) ability to effectively mount a defense against the inevitable metaphorical or literal storm that is eventually as unavoidable as the sunrise. We need each other to develop both as individuals and as groups. We need others to help us develop as leaders and thinkers, and others need us for the same. A person cannot develop and hone leadership in a vacuum- they need the opportunity to lead. A person is also limited in their potential for development of personal skills when doing so alone. Proper attention and care being paid to the planting, nurturing, and growth, of our capacity to both lead and follow in an emergency is beneficial to our daily lives. Emergency and military leadership abilities enhance your potential for success in the civil realm every day, there is no drawback to developing such skills. A lack of such developed skills though cannot be quickly overcome when they are suddenly needed for a time sensitive, high stress emergency. Patton's statement re:sweat saving blood may be true, but he fell short of completing his analysis. His famed opponent, Erwin Rommel, took it a step further- and this is the philosophy we should strive to live by: "Sweat saves blood, blood saves lives, but brains saves both." We should be training and learning together to be better, more capable, more fit, more intelligent individuals. If you haven't sought out professional training I implore you do so. If you haven't involved yourself in the American Pioneer Corps or at the least your local Search and Rescue or Volunteer Fire crew, or even a Boy Scouts Venturing crew or the like, I ask that you consider doing so. If you are uninvolved with the above simply for lack of such an organization being unavailable, let's start one. It takes work- but the dividends it lays are worthwhile. |

I just tacked a thread in the APC hometown forum for compiling links to APC related announcements or threads in GD. |

I think that's a great message, but IMO only scratches the surface. Of course, short quips pretty much always do that. Training, working at stuff, building skills leads to growth. That is always good. Appropriate training changes the definition of what is "okay" and "comfortable" to the trained, where what you'd previously consider major hardship results in a shrug and you dealing with it and moving on. As in the more I train, the less uncomfortable I get in sub-optimal environments and situations overall. Look at Covid as a prime example - those who have been on two-way ranges and other life-and-death situations know instinctively that you can do everything right and still die. The average G10 citizen has never experienced that, so when something like Covid comes along they overreact one way or another. Being good at math helps, but you look at the Karen-run state of things and it speaks volumes about the understanding of risk, danger, and statistics in society at large. |
