Who has run into strange people out in the wilds? I have on two occasions I remember. Once while driving around the middle of the Kisatchie NF on some uncharted section of roads I came up on an intersection. Standing right in the middle, no vehicle in sight, was what I can only describe as a homeless bum. Would have fit right in under any given bridge in a big city. No bag, nothing but him and ragged, filthy clothes. I was alone but armed so I proceeded through the intersection and he stepped aside, staring at me the whole time. Never motioned for me to stop or anything. Thankfully I was able to get back to the main roads without going back through there. Second was while deer hunting up in a tree stand in a WMA in the Atchafalaya Basin. It was getting near mid-morning and I was about to climb down and hit the camp till the afternoon hunt. Heard a branch break about forty yards away and I froze, thinking I had maybe a deer to kill. Nope. It was an old man. Staring at me like I owed him money. As far as I could tell, he wasn't hunting. No gun in sight and no hunter orange (suicidal in those woods during deer season). After a minute of staring me down I was certain it was ME he was staring at so a called out "can I help you?" Crazy bastard just turned around and faded in to to undergrowth. Never said a word. Also, other than that branch breaking, he never made any noise at all as he disappeared. Weird as fuck. I was no where near the WMA boundary so if he thought I was trespassing he was badly mistaken. I couldn't wait to get TF out of there, and spent that afternoon in camp drinking beer instead of hunting. Both times I was very glad to have a firearm with me. |

Some of the folks here give 'em a good run for their money.

Back in the 90's when we were living in Colorado, our Jeep club passed through a remote area that was owned by the Brotherhood of the White Temple. They owned the bridge that we needed to use to access the trails, so we drove through the river bed as the waterway was on public land, but not the bridge itself. Anyway...when we finally rolled through their village (which was very rundown) it was a ghost town. They knew we were coming and fled inside. We saw shades move and silhouettes in all of the homes. We were being watched from a high vantage point which made me feel very uneasy. It was like an old Western movie. We were respectful and drove slow enough to not kick up any dust, but we all wanted to get through as quickly as possible. We had about 10 rigs with us on that trip. Lots to talk about when we finally hit the trailhead. Creepy |

There aren't any woods in my area. On the occasion I traveled to places where there are woods, I always find weird people in them. Some of them are doing exercise for no apparent reason. Some are eating sugar chickens. Sometimes there is gunfire it doesn't seem to be well aimed and definitely doesn't hit what is being aimed at if they are aiming at something. Some weird are vomiting uncontrollably. Kind of uncanny how often this happens when I travel to places with woods. That's why I live in the desert. Trees drive men mad. |

Quoted: A lot. It’s especially weird when they don’t see me up in a tree while hunting. Hikers and other weirdos Easier than you would think. Another occasion years before in that same WMA me and a few buddies were scouting for deer season. The gun season wasn't open yet but I'm pretty sure we ruined the hunt for that poor bowhunter we walked up on. He was up thirty feet in a tree and we never knew it till he (thankfully) gave us a polite cough to let us know he was there. We were kids (teens) and never considered that bow season was in full swing lol. |

Weirdest one for me.... Out in the middle of nowhere in Patagonia. Hadn't seen anyone for about 6 hours on this little road. It is cool outside and we have light jackets for outside the car and long sleeve shirts. I round a corner and a guy is there on the side of the road. He is just staring at us but then he waves as we go by. He is naked and there is nothing around there at all. Just light small shrubbery. No cars. No bikes. Nothing. |

You know what is really freaky? Being in the woods at night. You always hear tons of shit moving around you, but you never see what it is. I'm always expecting to turn around and see some crazy fuck just grinning at me. |

I do solo back country camping. Luckily this has never happened to me but is my ultimate fear and why I never go unarmed. Something so unwholesome, creepy about these types of encounters. Friend and his wife lived in West Vagina for a time. They were camping in an area with two remote sites near each other. The other site was occupied. In the middle of the night they get awakened by a scuffle happening at the other site. They run over to see what the problem was. Some drunk bum attacked the other campers. He was screaming something obscure like ‘get off my land’ and swinging an ax. The campers managed to subdue the guy and tie him up. My friend had to do almost a mile hike to get cell signal to call police. A cliche fat, lazy, Southern Sheriff showed up acting like he was annoying they woke him up for this. The Sheriff seemed like he knew the perp and the assault was no big deal because, “Yup.. Ol Crazy Bill will do that from time to time”. Pretty sure the Sheriff just gave the guy a ride home, no arrest or anything. |
|
I ran into a homeless camp back in 99. The police were called and told them to clean up their mess and leave. One guy was arrested for some reason. I used to mess with the pothead teens when I was a kid by hooting, growling, and throwing rocks at them from the darkness ![]() Some people had never been in the woods at night so it was fun for a stupid kid I was camping alone and saw what I believe to be a satanic gathering. I quietly got away and returned the next day for my stuff, but it was all destroyed and ripped up. |

They charge an initiation fee and then a monthly fee for another lesson each month. None of it is in person, it was done through the mail. I imagine it’s online now. It’s all repackaged standard 1900 occultism, and a classic New Age moneymaker that predates the New Age. |

Quoted: I’m guessing Peeps. AZ woods are full of welfare cases wanting free stuff from food banks and other locals. There ain’t nothing more country than sitting in your singlewide, bitching about the government, and waiting on your SSI Disability direct deposit and hoping that sale on Bud Light at the Dollar Store don’t end before it hits. |
|
I have been outdoors a lot. On several occasions encountered very strange people. It's why I never go unarmed. When seconds count, police are only hours or days away. Furthermore, even if I could manage a phone call, how am I going to describe my location? Take the third dirt road you see, hang a left at the dead possum, and then a right at the deer standing there? |

Of course help is still hours away, and you should certainly be armed. |

I don't have a sat phone, and in an emergency it would be hard to communicate that info anyway. Serious Q: how does one get lat/long data from a cell phone? My plan is to exfil RFN, hopefully BEFORE any shots are fired. |

Years back wife and I along with her cousin and a friend hiked up to Olympic hot springs, a set of natural fed hot spring rock pools. Takes a couple hours to get to. We went back down in the dark. Was a full moon and cold, snow still on the ground. As we're going down we spot someone coming up the trail. It was a dude in his 20s, by himself, wearing only jeans and a T shirt. No pack, no flashlight, nothing else. We said hello, he said hello in the most plain way possible, and he continued up the trail without saying another word. Haven't been back there in years, especially after a body was discovered partially dissolved in one of the pools. |

My plan is to exfil RFN, hopefully BEFORE any shots are fired. I am often alone in the backcountry. I carry a Garmin Inreach. Link It can (tediously) send a text via satellite by itself, or (harmoniously) pair with an app on your (out of cell signal) smart phone and easily send text messages. The location is automatically included in your message. There is a monthly subscription fee but it’s not too bad. |

I guess if they were fearful of a nuclear apocalypse, they could've picked a better area further away from the Front Range/NORAD. But they were harmless. It was just weird to roll up to an empty village and being watched like that in such a remote area. This happened before the internet so we had no idea who those people were. We were just following an OHV map and stumbled upon it. Our trail leader came over the CB and told us all to stay quiet and be mindful of our speed. The guys that didn't have a radio in their cab were like 'WTF did we just drive through?!' when we finally stopped. Lol |

Quoted: I’ve had people come out of no where in the pine barrens. One with a shotgun, but we were at a grave yard. Pineys don’t really care for outsiders. Dolly Sods too. Nothing too weird in Montana, more land for them to spread out on. I occasionally drive along the edge of Dolly Sods, it's fucking creepy

I ran into people (trespassing) all the time at one farm we owned for many years. Too many poachers to count. There was access at a couple of roads, but still relatively remote once you got back in there. One of the more memorable encounters was a large Vietnamese family I ran out of there on numerous occasions who were digging worms along the streams to sell to tackle stores. They’d dig these monster trenches that looked like a deep bottom plow had came through. Surprisingly large operation! Another time I bumped into Bigfoot researchers who claimed there was one living in my woods. They prattled on and on about how they tracked him onto my land and wanted to setup a stakeout. I told them I’d spent years at all hours of the day and night hunting there and had never seen nor heard anything resembling a Sasquatch. Those shows where they look for Bigfoot are all BS, just so you know. |

Quoted: Not woods, but weird incident in the mountains. There was a gravel/mountain road that went through the Sandias connecting Albuquerque to whatever was on the other side. Nice drive. On that stretch of road there was a woman murdered there in '99. Vehicle went off into a culvert and got stuck. At some point she was murdered and found near the entrance of a cave up there. Used to drive the mountain road once in a while to kill time. I drove it one night, probably around midnight, and came around the bend to the memorial/murder site. I see someone in the headlights sitting on the memorial slowly kicking their legs back and forth like a restless child. As I got close I saw a skinny dude with long, black greasy hair staring at me as a drove by. He had fucked up, rotten teeth and the most evil smile I've ever seen. He tracked me, turning his head as I drove by, smiling. In the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. Maybe it was just my knowledge of the location, but that guy seemed like evil personified. I took the long way back. This is the memorial he was sitting on: https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/147863/IMG_4673-3186687.jpg |

He had climbed a tree and was perched up on a huge limb about 10 ft up. Some guy came walking through and started to set up below the tree my dad was in. He let him get all comfortable and then my dad spoke up. In a normal voice he just said " I believe this spot is taken" He said the guy nearly jumped out of his skin. lol The guy apologized and moved on. |
