Has anyone read any of the 411 books by David Paulides? Are they are as creepy as they sound?

http://www.messagetoeagle.com/missing411.php

The author, David Paulides, was at a National Park doing research for another book he was writing, when a tip from a Forest Ranger lead him into a 3-plus year investigation of people who have vanished in the forests near or inside of our National Parks, sometimes in the presence of friends and relatives, and the unusual circumstances surrounding their disappearances.
People are calling it the most disturbing book they have ever read. It is impossible to put down or forget.

David Paulides is a retired police officer and knows that people get lost in the woods, or they commit suicide, or there is an accident, and some people even intentionally want to disappear off-the-grid-but this book is not about those people.

Missing 411 is a book about the unusual cases of missing persons which baffle relatives and authorities.

Paulides identifies clusters of missing people across the U.S. and Canada, cataloging unusual disappearances which have been happening for centuries and are still happening; he talks about the National Park's attitude towards missing persons, and an ongoing cover up to suppress the data (presumably because its 'bad for business'), and he also exposes cases on missing children which do not appear on any national database; he shows unusual (and often times disturbing) details about the cases which happen over and over again; the unusual behavior of bloodhounds/cadaver dogs involved in the search process; and details about how the surrounding environment also plays a role in the disappearances.

Three criteria you want to avoid based on the abduction stories:

(1) try to avoid marshy biomes
(2) stay away from large clusters of berry bushes
(3) you probably don't want to be the last person in a linear hiking formation

While there are other explanations offered (serial killers, occult rituals, interdimensional rifts) for these strange, unexplained disappearances, signs point to a man-eating bigfoot of some type that the Native Americans have known about. I personally have never seen such creatures but these crime scene reports are flat out bizarre.

have told this story here before,  but I have seen a bigfoot up close in bright light.  it was certainly irritated at being caught off guard and almost run over, and based on it's size and speed, it could *easily* take and kill a human without being seen or caught.  the one I saw was huge, it was retardedly fast and agile, and immensely strong.  I would not want one to decide it wanted to take you while out in the wild, cause it would.

that being said, this is probably mostly drug issues, or human criminals vs the paranormal.

That's the reports that have been corroborated as well. Humans are no match for their quickness or strength. They can close incredible distances, before a human can even react. There was supposedly a world class hunter in the Yukon that got stalked by one of these things, while he was up in a makeshift blind. When his friends landed for pickup, all they could find was his clothes neatly piled.

Must have been a female bigfoot. They're universally fastidious.

And it gets better. 1969. The Mysterious Abduction of 6 Year Old Dennis Martin in the Great Smokey Mountains that led to the deployment of the Green Berets. To this day, no FOIA requests have been answered:

http://www.nationalparkstraveler.com/2009/06/unresolved-search-and-rescue-cases-are-scattered-throughout-national-parks

Word that Dennis, a soon-to-be-7-year-old, went missing 40 years ago on Father’s Day spurred one of the largest hunts in National Park Service history. Before it ended the FBI investigated, more than 1,400 searchers combed Great Smokey’s rugged backcountry, an estimated 70,000 linear miles were said to have been walked, and 1,110 helicopter sorties were flown. Noted psychic Jeane Dixon suggested where the boy might be found, the White House monitored the search, and active Army and National Guard troops on summer maneuvers joined the hunt.

For two weeks they searched.

The Martin family, from Tennessee, was celebrating that Father’s Day Weekend as it traditionally had, by heading into the Smokies. On June 13, the Friday before Father’s Day, father William, his young sons Dennis and Douglas, and their grandfather, Clyde, were striding up onto the backbone of the Smokies.

Setting out from the Cades Cove Campground, they moved up the Anthony Creek Trail for little more than a mile and then veered right onto the Russell Field Trail and continued on for several more miles in the warm summer weather.

The Martins moved along Leadbetter Ridge above the Left Prong of Anthony Creek and made their final run of the day to Russell Field. A grassy break in the forest, this clearing offered room for the youngsters to burn off whatever energy they still carried after the long day’s hike. For the adults, the bald offered panoramic views across the Smokies and time to relax, visit, and watch their offspring grow in the mountains. There the Martins spent the night, rising on June 14 for the final 90-minute or so push east to Spence Field and its simple, three-sided shelter, where more relatives were waiting.

While the Martins long had traced this route to Spence Field, for Dennis Martin, whose seventh birthday was but a week away, the 1969 hike and camp-out with his grandfather, father, and 9-year-old brother was his first over-nighter, a passage that would sharply define the separation between him and his younger siblings and mark his acceptance into the mountains.

Arriving at Spence Field, the Martins found a clearing that trends northeast-southwest, one that basks under sunny skies but which also offers little shelter from pounding thunderstorms, which are common in the Smokies come summer. From here the Anthony Creek drainage funnels any rain that falls on the north side of the bald quickly down into Tennessee, while the Eagle Creek drainage does the same for the south side, flowing in crooked and rocky leaps and bounds into North Carolina where it dumps its fill into Fontana Reservoir.

The Smokies are rippled with drainages eroded by creeks that bound over ledges and dart through boulder-choked stretches before coming to rest momentarily in pools. The mountains flanks in many places feature cliffs both steep and cut with crevices.

Roaming these mountains and their shadows are the occasional wild cats that pass through the area and the resident black bears that easily can, and actually do, reach 500 pounds by feasting on the fish and vegetation that are so abundant in the Smokies.

Into this realm of bears, panthers, feral hogs, and rattlesnakes wandered Dennis. The slight, 4-foot-tall youngster and his older brother had been playing with two other boys on the forest clearing. While the adults relaxed on the west side of the bald within view of the youngsters, the whispering boys conspired around some clumps of serviceberry bushes to split up, circle the knob through the cloaking woods, and surprise the adults from behind. Douglas and the other two boys went south and then west, Dennis went northwest, along the Appalachian Trail, and disappeared into the forest.

“We knew what they were doing,” 32-year-old William Martin would say later. “We also knew when they sent Dennis another way, because they thought the red T-shirt he was wearing would spoil their scheme.”

Three minutes, perhaps, but no more than five, passed without anyone spotting or hearing Dennis. At that point his father began calling out to his young son. He then followed the Appalachian Trail west for about a mile before doubling back, thinking Dennis surely had rejoined the others at Spence Field and was waiting for dinner. When William Martin found this hope shattered, he headed west again, this time all the way back to Russell Field, only to return, alone, to Spence Field.

While the boys’ father was making these frantic searchers, their grandfather, Clyde, headed all the way back down Anthony Creek to Cades Cove, a distance of roughly 8.5 miles, and reached the ranger station shortly before 8:30 p.m. to summon help.

Initially, the response summoned by word of Dennis having gone missing was not unlike any other “hasty search” that has been mounted in the country’s national parks and national forests. A small group quickly looks in the immediate area where the missing person was last seen, and if their efforts prove fruitless, the search broadens, both in terms of terrain and searchers.

These days searches have been refined to the point that in 90-95 percent of the cases the subject is located within 12 hours. But 40 years ago searches weren’t so methodical.

Before long the hunt for Dennis Martin turned into the largest-to-date SAR mission in Park Service history. Spence Field would turn into a military base camp, with landing zones cut from the surrounding forest. The Park Service staff quickly became overwhelmed by the turnout of volunteers and struggled to manage them.

Complicating the search for Dennis was rain. More than 2.5 inches of rain – and possibly 3 inches in and around Spence Field -- fell throughout the night. The aftermath not only challenged searchers the following morning, but it would confound them in the ensuing days.

That Dennis Martin became lost was not that unusual. Thousands of national park visitors find themselves lost or injure themselves and need rescuing by rangers every year. More often than not those searches are conducted in mountainous settings above 5,000 feet.

Some settings, such as Great Smoky Mountains National Park, feature dense, confusing and cloaking thickets of vegetation that can trap you if you stray from an established trail. Other landscapes can lead you astray with maze-like canyons or trails that thread through fins of rock or scurry across featureless slick-rock. Some who go lost become confused and disoriented by hypothermia, heat exhaustion, or altitude sickness. And some are trapped by water.

Where had Dennis Martin wandered off, and how come other hikers in the area didn’t see him?

In hindsight, the Martin case came to be the example of how not to conduct a search-and-rescue mission. Too many people were on the ground without proper supervision, a strong overhead team was not in place to direct operations, search training perhaps had not been practiced as much as it is today and certainly was not as perfected.

For two weeks the active search dragged on. At one point 71 Green Berets were engaged, living in the mountains, eating rattlesnakes they came upon in their fruitless search for Dennis.

A park spokesman at one point, no doubt in a moment he later wished he could erase, practically promised that the boy would be found: “He may be a little bit the worse for wear after being out in the open so long, but I’m confident we’ll find him.”

Park Service officials finally had to admit it was fruitless to continue the hunt after crews intensively covered nearly 60 square miles of the park’s backcountry. The boy’s family, refusing to believe the boy died in the mountains, offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to his whereabouts. It went unclaimed.

Ask Larry Nielson today where he thinks Dennis Martin is and his answer is quick, and short: “I think he’s up there,” he replies, referring to the thicket-tangled spine of the Appalachians.

Bob got a new .30-06 and was itching to go hunting.  He drove into the National Forest, made sure there were no rangers about and commenced the stalk.

He came over a hill and there before him was a small Squatch.  It was attempting to catch fish in a stream.  Bob couldn't believe his luck, so he shot the Squatch dead.

As he came close to claim his prize he felt a tap on his shoulder.  He turned and saw a much larger Squatch looming over him.

"That was my little cousin you just shot.  I am going to give you a choice.  Rough Squatch Sex or Certain Death.  Which will it be?"

Bob realized he was cooked.  He sadly dropped his rifle and let the Squatch rip him open.  Good to his word, when Squatch was finished he collected his kin and left Bob bleeding.  Bob took two days to crawl out of the forest and the next three months in the hospital.

When he was released he drove to the nearest gun store and bought a new .30-06.  He was gunning for revenge on that Squatch that violated him.  Creeping back into the forest he retraced his steps.  He came over the hill and to his surprise and glee there was the Squatch that had ripped him open.  Without missing a beat he shot that Squatch dead.

As he approached the target, though, he again felt a tap on his shoulder.  He turned around to see an enormous Squatch.  It had to be 10 feet tall!

"That was my brother you just shot.  I am going to give you a choice.  Rough Squatch Sex- and I mean NO LUBE- or Certain Death.  Which will it be?"

Bob dropped his rifle and started to cry.  It was to no avail.  Squatch sex is rough sex indeed.  Bob took several days to crawl out and six months in the hospital to be stitched and stapled back together.

Bob once again, however, emerged from the hospital with revenge on his mind.  He got yet another .30-06 and headed right back into that forest.  It was do or die time, and he was going to get the Squatch that violated him.  No lube indeed!

As he came up over the hill he discovered the stream was deserted.  No Squatches in sight.

Just then he felt a tap on his shoulder.  He slowly turned around to see the enormous Squatch loom over him.  The Squatch just shook his head in disgust.

"Let's face it, Bob.  You don't come here for the hunting."

Where did you see it?  Can you describe what you saw in more detail?

It's a long story if I add all the detail, I'll try and find it and post it later when I have time. Long story short, wife and I were lost in the mountains above Heber Utah in the mid 90's. We were trying to find a friend's cabin where everyone was staying for the weekend. Go hopelessly lost and I was in the "F' it, we're going back home" stage. Just driving fast as possible to get to a paved road and go home.

Skidded around a corner I didn't see coming, almost went in the ditch, but instead surprised what I thought was a moose in the middle of the road. I skidded to a stop and right in front of us, in the bright headlights of our car was something I have never seen before or since.  over seven foot tall,  weighing I'm guessing in the 600-800 lb range, thing.  Covered in light brown hair,  a male, human'ish face but not quite the same. Heavy heavy brow, deep set eyes,  very strong thick jaw.  very dark looking.

he was surprised and irritated,  when the car came flying around the corner he flinched and dropped into a crouch,  he was headed left to right across the road but there was a very high banked hillside to our right.  he looked first at me,  then at my wife,  appeared irritated and somewhat indecisive, like he wasn't sure if he should go up the wall/hillside to the right,  eat both of us for dinner or go back where he came.  he sat there for a second doing what I can only describe as thinking about it, or regaining orientation, then as fast as you could blink,  turned back the way he'd come,  took two HUGE steps and dove headfirst over a very thick wall of oak brush maybe seven feet high.

he had been almost all the way across a wide gravel road. He was roughly in front of my wife in the passenger seat. I'd skidded to the right trying to control the car, so was almost off the road to the right. He turned, covered the ENTIRE road plus the ditch part off the side and then over the bushes in two great strides then the jump.  it would take me probably 7-8 of my biggest jumps to cover the same ground. The acceleration was breathtaking.

the background, 2 fairly conservative kids, married a couple years. No drinking, no drugs, nothing. I was playing football at a division I college at the time, I'm an offensive tackle. I'm 6'5" and at the time about 320. My best friend is 6'8" and close to four bills.  I know how big,  fast people move.  That thing was faster than any human I have ever seen. Ever.

I wound up in the NFL later,  and played against who would arguably be the fastest, or one of the fasted defensive ends ever to play the position. that multi-year all-pro could not hold bigfoot's jock.  My guess is if you put a clock on bigfoot he'd run very close to a 4.0 40. Possibly even sub 4.0.  I have never seen anything move that fast short of possibly a big cat.  He had the size and sheer spookiness of a lion or big tiger but moved faster.    it was frightening.

our car was on, but the sunroof and windows were open, I never heard a sound when he took off. No footsteps, no rustling when he went over the bushes.  Not that you would, he cleared the bushes so didn't hit much leaves, but even when he landed. he was just......gone.

I thought I had hallucinated the whole thing. I was like a dream. You immediately start to discount what you saw. I looked at my wife and said "did you see that?!"

her response was "that, was a bigfoot!"

we hauled  butt. I stomped the gas pedal and we unassed the place immediately.  had bigfoot wanted to, he could have ripped the roof off the car and killed us both.   His biceps were roughly the size of my thighs. his thighs were like my waist. and I"m a 46" waist.   I have never seen anything that massive. And he didnt' look like the chubby rounded bigfoot in the famous film. He was big,  big arms,  well defined. Not cut like a bodybuilder, just massive musculature, and not a big chubby. Just big. And fast.

it's been 20 years and still spooks me a little thinking about it. The other notable thing were his eyes.  Those are not animal eyes.  They are human eyes,  with intelligence.  The other thing is the overall feeling was very dark and ominous.  Without having had a verbal exchange, the feeling we both got from the bigfoot was one of maliciousness, or irritation and anger.  It wasn't benign. It was angry, and didn't like us at all.  It was scary.

our car was on, but the sunroof and windows were open, I never heard a sound when he took off. No footsteps, no rustling when he went over the bushes.  Not that you would, he cleared the bushes so didn't hit much leaves, but even when he landed. he was just......gone.

I thought I had hallucinated the whole thing. I was like a dream. You immediately start to discount what you saw. I looked at my wife and said "did you see that?!"

her response was "that, was a bigfoot!"

we hauled ass.

It was scary.

have told this story here before,  but I have seen a bigfoot up close in bright light.  it was certainly irritated at being caught off guard and almost run over, and based on it's size and speed, it could *easily* take and kill a human without being seen or caught.  the one I saw was huge, it was retardedly fast and agile, and immensely strong.  I would not want one to decide it wanted to take you while out in the wild, cause it would.

that being said, this is probably mostly drug issues, or human criminals vs the paranormal.

Heavy heavy brow, deep set eyes,  very strong thick jaw.  very dark looking.

he was surprised and irritated,  when the car came flying around the corner he flinched and dropped into a crouch,  he was headed left to right across the road but there was a very high banked hillside to our right.  he looked first at me,  then at my wife,  appeared irritated and somewhat indecisive, like he wasn't sure if he should go up the wall/hillside to the right,  eat both of us for dinner or go back where he came.  he sat there for a second doing what I can only describe as thinking about it, or regaining orientation, then as fast as you could blink,  turned back the way he'd come,  took two HUGE steps and dove headfirst over a very thick wall of oak brush maybe seven feet high.

the background, 2 fairly conservative kids, married a couple years. No drinking, no drugs nothing. I was playing football at a division I college at the time, I'm an offensive tackle. I'm 6'5" and at the time about 320. My best friend is 6'8" and close to four bills.  I know how big, and how fast people move.  That thing was faster than any human I have ever seen. Ever.

It is amazing how many cultures, within the US, and outside our borders have a "hairy man" or "ape man" myth.  I have done a fair amount of backcountry traveling, and come to the conclusion it is a lot easier to get lost that most will admit;
once that situation hits, panic can set in- but not to find any gear or DNA boggles the mind.

there was no smell, but from what I could tell, the wind was blowing directly away from us.  when I skidded to a stop,  the dust from the car drifted right into his face, causing him to blink and squint his eyes even more. So if he had a strong smell, we never smelled it.

totally agree with you.  Had I not seen it myself,  I would NEVER believe it. I sometimes don't believe it still and have to go ask the wife if we really saw what we saw.

so I get it.  and I honestly don't really mind one way or the other if people believe it,  since I wouldn't, it doesn't matter to me when people don't. It's not rational what we saw so I fully expect people to disbelieve it and bear no ill will when they do.  In my real life I rarely, if ever, tell anyone about it.  Because if you do, you become "that guy",  which I have no desire to be.

I'm just reporting what we saw under what I would consider ideal circumstances. Ours is the best bigfoot sighting I've ever heard of, since there was no ambiguity about it,  we didn't see a shadow, we didn't think we might maybe have seen some blurry shape,  we looked right into his eyes.  We are not wild people, we don't drink and smoke,  I don't listen to art bell, and prior to seeing this thing, I'd have said "BS" to anyone claiming they saw bigfoot.  And people that do see him say "we saw this huge dark shape across a swamp"  or "there was this huge black shape running through the trees". Too easy for shadows,  fear, perspective, imagination to escalate those kinds of things.

we literally looked into his eyes, he looked at both of us. I can roughly describe his face to you. He was human, not an animal. He was thinking.  You could see the emotions on his face.  irritation, surprise,  indecision, finally a decision and then he was gone.  I can't deny those things, since I sat through them, but I can't help buy sympathize with your feelings on the matter, since they would be my own in your shoes.

I have a personal theory,  I personally believe it might be Cain.  I am a Christian and believe, to some extent, the stories of the Bible. My hunch is that there is one bigfoot, his name is Cain, and like the Bible says, he's cursed to walk the land, hated.    It never says he'll live forever,  but my feeling is that if The Lord throws a curse on you, the curse is not going to be short or easy to deal with. I.E. it's probably Cain.

that explains all the other problems with bigfoot, I.E. lack of bones,  Lack of infrastructure used by bigfeet etc. If it's one guy, he's of Biblical size and origin,  he's been roaming the earth since the time of Adam, he's dang smart, he's good at evading people, etc.

Doesn't boggle the mind at all, if you've actually been out there, and/or done searches.

I've put teams into the same area six times...and by same area I mean a relatively level 250mx1000m area, with light brush. Same area six times, body found on the seventh try.

A son from a local ADV club I belong to disappeared in Anza Borrego some years back. We know the exact area, found his abandoned truck. We know what direction he would have had to head out to get to camp or civilization, but the terrain is extremely rough. Disappeared, found his hat over a kilometer away, but that was it. I'm sure he's still there, close by.....but terrain is too rough to do a really good search. And I'm sure he's not the only one there, lots of folks die out yonder, lots of bodies.

Think about it. Most of us have been only on this planet for 30 odd years. That's a relative eyeblink, in relation to the storied history of this planet. I don't believe the Smithsonian or the U.S. Govt, since nearly everything in our society is filtered, so as not worry our pretty little heads about or contradict accepted dogma.  Now that's not to say that I 100% believe in the existence of the Bigfoot because I have never personally saw one, but I have a hard time believing that thousands of witnesses along with Native Americans are suffering from a severe hallucination of some type.
