Its something I've been looking into for a long time and a friend of mine gave me a good $800 worth of well painted Ultramarines. I was like  . Its expensive, and I'm poor, so it was a good break for me!

I used to be into it a lot in High School, but it got really expensive. I love the story, though, and have kept up on the better novels that come out from BL. I liked Dawn of War since it gave a good representation of the game, only I didn't have to putz about painting and modeling. Plus, you can actually beat the Necrons as the Imperial Guard. Anyway, good score on your buddy's Ultramarines. Name your captain Uriel Ventris and get it over with.  For Tanith! For The Emperor!! |
Who'd you play as? I have Dawn of war and Winter assault, theyre both pretty good. I'm waiting for Dawn of War II hoping that it will give a bit better resemblance of Warhammer 40k then its predecessor. Unquestioned Faith is the Strongest |

Yep, thats what I bought. My current force is pretty small. Hive Tyrant Carnifex (twin linked Venom cannon) 24 Termies 24 Hormaguants 8 Genestealers 3 Warriors 4 Ripper bases My list comes up to 1115 or thereabouts, pretty small, but playable. I painted all 48 guants, 4 ripper bases, and 8 geanstealers in an epic 4-day straight painting binge.  I used the paint scheme on the box too, so they look pretty good. Oh, and pics:

nice man, when Im done Im going to try and get a picture or two of my entire force up. the ones he gave me are EXTREMELY well painted, my painting is getting better, but you can tell Im no pro. They work on a mob mentality, so, get lots of fucking gaunts and then a couple more synapse creatures is what Id suggest |
Next on my list to buy are more Warriors, and maybe Tyrant Guards, my Synapse is far too easy to get blown away. I think if I take Warriors, I can come off better than taking the Hive Tyrant since I keep them only for Synapse, not as combat units. But there's also the matter of my Carnifex, which I just converted from a tusked, regenerating, extended carapace, bonded exoskeleton, reinforced chitin, crushing clawed, points sucking abomination into a shooty 'fex. Although new 5th ed rules = Running Carnifex, so it could have worked this time around.   Whew. That's a lot of nerd-speak to come out all at once, I better lay down....

Im trying to figure out how to field all of my special weapons at once without breaking any rules or destroying combat effectiveness. ETA: I dont ever want to face a carnifex. My rolling skills are poor..

'Fexes go down easy. Just take Lascannons and you're set. But word to the wise, as a nid player, there is nothing I fear more than having every enemy gun on the board pointed at my two Synapse units. Without synapse, my Guants have to take a leadership test just to move. At 5, they aren't going anywhere, and if they fail, they either fall back to the remaining synapse, or to the board edge if you already took them out.  And its bad when lasguns can actually wound my Warriors.

He's a moran, I only use 'kapew' noises to illustrate the puny little lasguns bouncing off my elite Incubi warriors! And I also go "karoosh!!!" to make the sound of a skimmers jet boosters kicking in....

A new series of books has started about the Horus Heresy, which have all been really good. The first three books follow the fall of Horus to chaos and some of his Space Marines who remain loyal. Horus Rising, False Gods and Galaxy In Flames were awesome, and so was Flight of the Eisenstein. From there, you can read the rest of the Horus Heresy Novels in any order. Anything written by Dan Abnett has been good so far. His Gaunt's Ghosts books have been great, and the first 2 have been collected in Omnibuses called the Founding and The Saint. Sandy Mitchell's Ciaphas Cain series has also been entertaining, and is kind of a flip from the Gaunt's Ghost books. If you're interested in Space Marines, the Ultramarines books by Graham McNeill are also collected in an omnibus and are pretty good. Like I said, most of these stories are pretty awesome, even if you don't know too much of the story. They pretty much lay out what you need to know. |

I have something like 2500 points worth of 3rd Company Ultramarines. But, they're painted like poop because I never thought to use one of those giant magnifying glasses/lights on an extending arm to see the details. I havent played with them in years, but I still love all the fluff. Kharn |

I agree with pretty much everything AgHistGrad02 said. Anything by Dan Abnett is a safe bet. The Eisenhorn trilogy is my personal favorite. The follow up Ravenor trilogy is also solid, if you're into the Inquistion. If you want more pure sci-fi-military action, the Gaunt's Ghosts series is right up your alley. Ciaphas Cain books are fun and add some humor to the mix. Most of the Horus Heresy books are also very good. I've read probably 75% of the published novels. While some are definitely better than others, only a few have been let downs. |
I think they're good businessmen. They might charge 50 bucks for a few plastic sprues, but they've been getting away with it for almost 20 years. |
thats a good point, its kind of scarey to pay 50 dollars for a new dreadnaught (Mine is at least 10 years old, it was before the were walking cubes) |
Honestly, I think you're better off getting a ForgeWorld dreadnought. They look 10x better, you can get the exact weapon options you want (though the new plastic dreadnought is at least a bit better about that than the old metal ones) and you're only paying like a 20 dollar premium on it. Or at least, that's the way it seems for me. I love the painting and modeling aspect of 40k.

they just released an omnibus for ultramarines. The eisenhorn trillogy might just be y favorite. Black sun dark sky? is a pretty good book nice and gory. |
