They are alll good movies and hard to vote on.  The Sand Pebbles has some great BAR and Lewis gun footage but it does get a tad draged out IMHO.

actually, one i really liked was "soldier in the rain" with jackie gleason. but my fav would be either "sand pebbles" or "bullitt".

If this isn't God's own truth, I don't know what is. Hollywood has  completely lost the ability to tell a compelling story without all the bling. They wonder why they aren't making any money ? They forgot how to make movies.

The great thing about "Sand Pebbles" is that for the most part it was true.  Richard McKenna, the man who wrote the novel, actually was a "Sand Pebble", serving on a Yangtse gunboat as a machinist mate like Holman for many years.  The description of China in the '20s and '30s during the occupation by foreign powers and the ongoing civil war and warlord rule was perfect.  

China Station duty was much prized then.  As described in the book it was MUCH better than duty on a blue water Fleet ship...especially a cruiser or battleship.

Great story.

Sand Pebbles by far is my most favorite Steve McQueen movie.

Accurate per History
Authentic military dress, manerism, etc.
Lots of great guns
A young Candace Bergan (only time she ever looked half way decent)
Awesome story and characters


And... IMO... the ship-to-ship boarding action when they break the Chinese boom across the river is one of my all time favorite movie battle scenes!

5 stars!

the Sand Pebbles was also very authentic because of the filming location [Taiwan & Hong Kong]

I liked the fight scene when MAKO kicks the big fat sailor's ass in the bar fight scene



Po Han "if I lose fight, do you lose money?"

Holman " yes and if you lose fight, you lose ship"

Holman "I wouldnt want to break a man's rice bowl"

I also noticed Steve McQueen's navy pea coat had two lower pockets with flaps? did they have a different pea coat design in 1926?

the uniforms and gear looked pretty accurate and the engine room scenes were very authentic in the San Pablo, I heard the ship was built in Taiwan just for this movie?

I really liked the movie. I liked it so much I read the book.  

When I first saw the movie I knew how it was going to end.  Damn I hate that ending.

I just watched this one a couple weeks ago. About as good as it gets!

Possible firearm "error" though...

In the part where the Chinese have captured Mako on the dockside and are slicing him up...

Holman takes out the BAR, aims in (AFTER he flips up the long-range sight!)...and fires a SINGLE ROUND...

I thought the BAR was full-auto only?
