It's that time of year again. 
Students show up tomorrow, and hopefully we can get rolling on this. This year's subject. The Space Shuttle. Initial calculations for getting the fuselage through the doorway come out to: Fuselage width= 2.5' Wingspan= 11' Total Length=16.875' Height= 6.5625' ETA: Roughly 1/7th scale Custodian is on board again. 
I presented the idea yesterday to the rest of the faculty and I seem to have some good buy in this year. The idea of side projects seemed to resonate with them. A list of possible side projects by other teachers and classes: Space Suit- Textiles Effects on human biology in space(using The Martian as inspiration)- Biology Model Rockets(hang the top three with the shuttle)- Physical Science T-Shirt design and Mission Patch- Textiles-Skills USA Posters of the Challenger and Columbia Crews-Graphics Picture Frames to hold posters designed by students- Wood shop and Graphics Wing and Tail brackets -Welding Moving outer doors/lights- Robotics IKON coming alive?-Robotics I talked to a couple Math teachers about diagramming the math used for the Apollo 13 mission, but didn't get anything real solid yet. And yes, ARFCOM, I'm considering adding a "Space Shuttle Door gunner" somewhere in the piece..... 
The idea will be to have a Space Shuttle hanging upside down, approaching the fictional IKON Soviet era satellite(Space Cowboys). This brings in a little cold war era feel for History purposes. The doors will hopefully open with possible lights on the inside of the bay, along with an arm to reach out to the satellite. This will hopefully be done using real power and not solar(ugg  ) and a touch screen using blue tooth mounted on the wall. No motion activation this year.
Not sure on size yet. Maybe something close to 16' long? That's just a guess. I need to go play around with break out dimensions a little. Bad news...... the district has decided to block arfcom this year, after adding it to the permitted list for the last 16yrs.  I'm appealing that and need to go talk to my principal. 
I need to find better dimension plans, but this will get us started. I also need to find a plastic model. That was pretty helpful last year for the submarine.

its heavy duty and will come uncharged, just need some nitrogen, its round and looks like a shock strut and is brand new, even if you don't use it for its true purpose im sure it could be used as a tank and I have tons of other items I can send pics of that you may or may not be able to use , cleaning out the shop finds useful shit

Growing up, Cold War missile systems in space were all over the news. I also like tying in popular culture, with movies like "Space Cowboys". I love the post-cold war story line, the selling of technology, and Russian untruths. |
