A Henry County jury found Billy Abbate guilty of one count of child molestation after two days of deliberations. Abbate will be sentenced Feb. 15 and faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. Jurors rejected the state's arguments that Abbate, 47, carried on a longterm sexual relationship with one of his female shooting students, who was 15 at the time. The age of consent in Georgia is 16. Jurors deliberated a short time Tuesday afternoon before leaving for the day about 5 p.m. They returned Wednesday and Thursday before reaching a decision. Testimony in the trial began last week. The girl took the stand and detailed the alleged incidents that started in January 2011. Henry County Assistant District Attorney Sandi Rivers said the girl thought Abbate loved her and they would one day marry. "In her mind, it's complicated, it's very confusing for a young girl," said Rivers. "She discovers he's not in love with her." Steve Lister represents Abbate and pleaded with jurors to find him innocent of all charges. “I would ask that you return a true verdict of not guilty,” he said during his closing statement. Abbate maintains his innocence. Lister told jurors that Abbate is being set up and evidence was manufactured against him. also McDonough, GA – Today, the jury in the trial of former shooting coach William “Billy” Abbate returned a verdict of guilty on one count of felony child molestation. Under Georgia code, the penalty for child molestation is a mandatory prison sentence of not less than five years and no more than twenty years.
The state’s case included the testimony of the victim and evidence that included both Abbate and the victim’s DNA found on adult toys in Abbate’s former residence. Under Georgia law, the judge in the case may probate Abbate’s sentence; a probationary sentence would include various special conditions including mandatory counseling. |

he was found with images on phone possibly computer of her or both of them, girl is still emotionally attached, and he was convicted of physical contact. he did it. but in the 50's he'd probably be married to her now. I have a hard time accepting what he's about to face. but then again, I have two sons and no daughters. |

Some are a bit racey considering her age. That means absolutely nothing. She's 15 and there's nothing between her ears but dandelion fluff at that age. |
