The original CO for leading this group had a 170 missions under his belt when asked to be CO (he walked with a clank as his brass balls made contact). Farking Stud!!!!

Yes, Barnes Wallace designed the deadly 12,000lb Tallboy and 22,000lb Grand Slam bombs. I have often thought just how devastating they would have been if a Laser Guidance was attached to them.

I don't know that much about the dam busters.
I do know they had some horrible survival rates (on the first missions anyway, there were several). The sheer physics and flying ability needed to make it work is amazing. Skip this multi thousand pound drum of TNT across water for a very long way. Don't have it hit the dam but stop right next to it, sink to a specified depth and then detonate. Sheesh. |

The BLU-82 aka Daisy Cutter was designed with LZ creation in mind, the Tallboy/Grand Slam were designed with penetration and tremendous destruction of reinforced and buried enemy installations. Hence the creation of the new extremely large penetration bombs we see being developed with the thermobaric warhead. IIRC, the BLU-82's are no longer in inventory as they have been all used up. The BLU-82 also had no penetration abilities however truly devestating for anyone and unreinforced structures in the open. LOTS OF OVERPRESSURE!!!!!!
