Around here most people ride side by sides. My son has a family package. Lots of our youth in church shoot. You can drop some serious dime on the sport. I usually shoot in the afternoons when it’s just us two.

I've been working with my fellow skeet / sporting shooters at the club I shoot at and we're putting in 5-stand.   Should have it up and running soon.

I rarely check this forum but yes both my son and I shoot competitively. He is far more active (and better at this point than I am.) He shoots SCTP and NSCA events, we just wrapped up SouthEast Regionals and head to San Antonio for Nationals this weekend.

Best advice I can give, find a good coach nearby and really work on understanding lead and how to calculate it. Understand, like golf, this is a highly a mental game plus lots of repetition. Shoot, a lot.

Just got back from NSCA Nationals, my son competed the first weekend. Main, 5-stand, FITASC, Super sporting. In his class and concurrent, he’s doing well.

I shot clays far more than I’m shooting my rifles and pistols now and since I’m involved in sctp and coaching now that’s probably it changing.

I occasionally shoot sporting clays at my club. I use an entry level Citori because I am an Arfcom poor. I tell people it's the most fun I've ever had missing targets.

Well, in fairness, three or four years ago the price of shotshells and components increased to the point where the sports were almost prohibitively expensive.

That's a fact.   Win 209 primers went from $20 to more than $70 (if you could find them), and lead is nuts too.

Shotgun primers are lower now and powder is actually available. There’s not really a price savings on reloading 12’s and to a lesser extent 20’s. 28 and .410 is still cheaper to reload.

Well it’s summer or well it feels like it already.   Going to try and start getting some practice in this year.

In my younger years I was a member of the Connecticut Travelers Sporting Clays club.  We got to shoot some of the premier venues in the Hudson Valley of New York and Connecticut.  I was shooting a Browning 425 in 12 gauge and a 425 in 20 gauge for the small gauge events.  I was never a top shooter but had a hell of lot of fun busting clays with a great bunch of folks on Sunday mornings.  Out of all the clubs I got to shoot I think Orvis Sandanona in Millbrook, NY was my favorite venue.  The targets and staff were top notch.

Refreshing this thread a bit. Anyone shoot a tournament recently?

Just got back from MS State and World English myself. Have a Regional coming up at a M&M.

I need to get practice in and then dabble with leagues. What’s the range of scores at league matches?  Wondering how good I need to be first

Depends on the club and shooters there. In general, if you’re not shooting 90% you’re not winning. Also will depend if it’s registered or not and if you’re shooting in classes. A D or C class shooter can win with a low 80’s score. Higher up in class, the higher score you’ll need to win. That’s why the NSCA has the class system.

My advice, look for a charity shoot where targets will be soft and you have a good chance if you’re a decent shooter.

Around here everyone has Side by Sides. Parking area looks like a truck and trailer conversion. My son and daughter in law shoot and I sometimes go out in the evenings and practice with them. Course is ten minutes away and a church member has his own course which is closer.

Absolutely, I find shooting clays to be more fun than shooting rifles or pistols at this point. The skill set is different and competing is about focus and consistency. Also some great people in the sport at very high levels that are extremely down to earth and willing to help you.

I wish I had the land to have a few traps but I know a few people that do.

TGS Outdoors has some really great content on competition clays. Types of targets, how to approach them and tips on how to improve. Same with the Clay Lab channel.
