i have a feeling that my crosshairs are at a funny angle in my brand new VXIII 4.5-14X40 scope.

when i have the cross hairs looking level mounted on the rifle, the top "Turret" adjuster knob looks like its leaning to the left a hair...

a gunsmith who did my trigger job today says it seems "off" and suggested maybe the crosshairs are not proper in the tube.

the guys at sportsmans told me to bring in the Leupold box and theyll swap the scope out for a new one.

so, is it just me, or should the crosshairs look level, WHILE  the top adjuster knob should look perfectly verticle?

i think i got a scope with a flaw, thats all...

I would expect the vertical part of the crosshairs to match up with the top turret, and the same for the horizontal and the side turret.

The only time I would expect that not to hold true is with a scope that has an extra turret cocked at an odd angle, such as the illumination turret on the Millet scopes.

Assuming that you have the crosshair truly level, it sounds like you got a lemon.  Lucky you having a reasonable dealer to work with!

Recoil forces of M1A's are hard on scopes. I had a NIB Pentex Lightseeker atop a M1A and the reticle became canted within 100 rounds.

This may be a possibility with your Leupold.

Never heard that one before.  I would think that a bolt gun's recoil would be much harder on the scopes then the M1a.  The M1a doesn't really recoil as much as the muzzle "flips" for me.

You are not going to go wrong with Leupold scopes.  They have a lifetime warranty and work very well.  I had to send one of mine in last year right before deer season as an inner lense came loose.  They fixed it and the scope is back on my M1a and works very well.

IIRC it's the reciprocal forces of the M1A bolt opening and closing that can stress the optic's internals.

Note Gale McMillan's comment at the end of the thread over at the Hide.

went back to sportmans warehouse, they swapped the scope out for me, with a NIB LEupold VXIII 4.5-14X40 ( same as the goofy one ) and i also got new Leupold QD rings, ( low )

so, the scope situation is fixed, the trigger has been worked on, and i have a unitized gas cylinder now.

tomorrow, load up some handloads / match rounds, and REALLY get to try her out finally.
