Should a Safety sear fail in a full auto will the weapon keep firing full auto? If so how greatly increased is the danger of a KaBoom? Also someone was telling me the otherday that RDIAS's tend to fail more than a RR would. Is there truth in this? |

I'm not sure what "safety sear" you are reffering to. If you mean the autosear completely fails, the rifle will slam-fire and possibly an out-of-battery firing could occur rupturing a case head(kaboom). If you mean the disconector, the firing will stop when you release the trigger and the notch on the hammer catches the edge of the trigger (regular sear). If you mean the regular sear fails, the rifle will continue FA with the trigger released. Some RDIAS's require a little tweaking to time them to a particular upper but once that is done they usually run perfect. In fact, I've never seen one go "out-of-time" once set. Failures for either type is extremely rare. I've only heard about 1 RDIAS failing and it was fixed by m60joe. I've seen 2 M-16(.mil owned weapons) autosears fail when cracks formed running from the autosear hole to the top of the lower and heard about 1 civvie RR with a similar failure. The .mil receivers were trashed and replaced by Crane with new weapons. I didn't hear the final outcome of the RR but I'm assuming that it probably could have been rewelded by a competent 'smith. The DIAS is a perfectly sound design that is equal to, if not actually better than, a regular autosear. The DIAS is aligned by the full rear lug of the upper and supported in the rear pocket of the lower. Arguments can be made that the steel units are stronger and more durable than the thin aluminum walls of the receiver that support the whole loading on the regular autosear pin. .02 |
