I have an 1897 and cannot for the life of me find the old broom handle plug that was in it.
Was wanting to get it out and smash some dove next weekend. Need to know the length of it
to plug it down to 3 rounds..

Isn't that 6 round capacity now?? (I haven't owned one for a while, don't remember) Measure the OAL of however many rounds you want to OMIT and cut a dowel rod of same length or a little shorter.

Magazine (on my 97) hold 5 rounds with 1 in the chamber (6 total).

My M37 Ithaca (now that I think about it, I need to take them out since I don't hunt with it anymore) has two rounds inserted into the magazine tube "in front" of the spring.  They act like a plug and only allow me to load 2 rounds into the tube.  I did that for another reason (always have a couple extra rounds).

That would be for an emergency.  If you have the time to plan ahead, do like the man suggested, measure 3 rounds and cut the stick that length.

Do you really hunt with that M97?  I took mine hunting a few times.  There is no way something that heavy should kick that hard.  I went back to my M37 Ithaca (lighter and it really doesn't seem to kick as hard as the M97.)

Thanks guys. Yeah, I just feel like getting it out and knocking the dust off so to speak.
Going to be tail gait dove hunting, so not carrying it around.

Every time I hunted with a 97 I came home with grooves on top of my thumb..... .That's one reason I haven't shot one for a long time.
