I just got a Pedersoli “Kentucky” percussion pistol from a friend in a trade, just the pistol; he had not shot it in several years and wanted to get rid of it. He never used actual black powder just the newer non corrosive substitutes. In any case I know the pistol was fairly well taken care of but as this is the first muzzle loader I have owned I need some gear.
From what I understand this is what I need, if you have suggestions as to brand or other gear, please let me know. Powder: 3F (What Brand?) Percussion caps (he said he thought it was #11 but was not sure) Ball and Patch (I want a mold eventually, but want plain shot before buying the mold) Capper Powder measure Bullet seater for the end of the ramrod |

I only use Goex or Swiss Black Powder Percussion caps (he said he thought it was #11 but was not sure) I use the Remingtons, the seem slightly cleaner than the CCI. Either will do Ball and Patch (I want a mold eventually, but want plain shot before buying the mold) The couple Pedersolis I played with seemed to have a tighter bore, If it is a 45, I would probably start out with a .440 and a .018 pillow ticking , may have to go .010 on the patch I use Hornady roundballs Capper This is the easiest, but you fill it more often http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/partDetail.aspx?catId=1&subId=1&styleId=1&partNum=CAPPER-P I use one of these too, but caps get sideways sometimes, http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/partDetail.aspx?catId=1&subId=1&styleId=1&partNum=CAPPER-REV-B Powder measure http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/partDetail.aspx?catId=1&subId=13&styleId=49&partNum=MAS-120 Bullet seater for the end of the ramrod See if your threaded for 10-32 or 8-32 before buying I have this on my loading rod. (Search part number 32045 ) http://muzzleloaderbuilderssupply.com Most of us use these, fine if your patches arent to big to get drug back up http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(teh5efladj45gypip4x3bqu2))/Categories/TableList.aspx?catID=6&subID=49&styleID=152 If you don't have a short starter, you should have one of those as well http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(teh5efladj45gypip4x3bqu2))/Categories/partDetail.aspx?catId=2&subId=23&styleId=55&partNum=PL-45 |
| thanks, Got a few odds and ends today, had to go with Hodgdons Tripel se7ven for powder. its a .54cal and Pedersoli reccomended a .535 ball with a .015 patch.... im thinking a .530 ball with a thicker patch might be better..... i will just thave to try it and find out waht works best i guess. |

Be cautious with Triple 7 and older imported muzzleloaders. As good as Pedersoli is they still used pretty mild steel in the front stuffers. Cut back to 80% charge. You may also find it hard to light off in a side hammer with a cap. The stuff is really made for in-line guns, but many say it works fine.
Good luck, lots of fun to be had. |
