hey guys. I am not a huge blade guy, but i like knives.

I'm a machinist in training and we had the last 2 weeks of classes to futz around. one classmate is a knive maker so naturally we all made a knife lol. i am pretty far into it and having fun. we already learned heat treating, rockwell testing and other forging processes earlier.

so far I have:
-01 tool steel ground stock.
-cut to shape
-hammer forged at a friends coal forge
-annealed over night
-shaped into a drop point, grip cuts made, blade beveled and draw filed.
-wenge wood grips (someone brought in a plank of it)
-holes drilled for brass pins in knife and grips.
-lanyard hole added.
-pummel-style rear tang shaped
-finished tweaking front serrations for scribing and rear serrations for grip.
-shaped front and rear of grips
-added my makers mark.
-heat treated @ 1550 for 1hr then oil quenched.
-annealed @400deg for 10min, brine/salt water quenched.
-Rockwell tested to RC60.
-stone washed for 1hr
-grips JB welded to tang

tomorrow i hope to get the grips profiled and possibly finished, then maybe do an edge over winter break.

more pics as i progress.

ps: i am addicted and i want a coal forge and scrap files and any good steel now! lol

Are you going to add a finish to the scales?

Looks good!

Just one thing I would change, no serrated edge that close to the handle. If you're thumb or hand slips, you'll be needing quite a few stitches.

its not an edge, its actually a finger/thumb grip area.

i put an edge on it with a new lansky system and its damn sharp.

Nice job on your first!
I have been making knives part time for a few years now....watch out its addicting.

If you do want to put a finish on it I have used Tru-Oil on natural handles with good luck.
