I am NOT impressed with their products anymore. I am a firm believer in 3 strikes and your out. Here are the following reasons why I am pissed off and disgusted with this company. #1 Just bought a brand new M1A loaded went to the range to shoot it for the first time. I fired 5 rounds of new federal 150gr through it when I fired the 5th round the gun blew up in my face the bolt and all its components blew out and were scattered 20 yards away I had powder burns on my face thank God I ware shooting glasses. I called them and they only want to rebuild the bolt or replace it. They said a new rifle was out of the question. So I gather up what I can find of the bolt and the rest of the crap and overnight it to them. I call 2 days later to see when I will have my new bolt I'm told 4 to 6 weeks. #2 6 months ago I bought a brand new M1A socom 2 it will only fire new 308 ammo that costs a arm and a leg will not fire any 7.62 jams every round after it fires. And here is #3 in sep 04 I came home on leave from Iraq and bought a Brand new M1A socom 16 Took it to us customs were I live and got a US custom card for it for those of you who don't know this with this card you can take your firearm in and out of the country the card costs nothing. I took the rifle back to Iraq with me. I had been issued a m14 so I turned it back in I had good ammo went out on a patrol and we got into a big fire fight the socom fired 3 rounds and jammed big time could not get bolt back to clear it and because of this I received my first purple heart when I couldn't shoot the ass hole with the rpg. The reason for the failer was the chamber was not borred right for 7.62 ammo But they state it can fire 308 and 7.62 with no problems wrong a lot of people I talk to have had the same problem with their socom 16's and socom 2's. thanks for nothing Springfield Armory. Just thought that anyone looking for a M1A should be careful |
Just so I am reading this correctly....you took a "commercially produced" gun to Iraq and were allowed to go on patrol with it? .....and quoted for posterity. |
that's just one of the things he said that made me go
|
|
if your saying that your in the "Military" and was issued a M14, and took your personal rifle on patrol, then your full of it |
|
I think that someone out there is very busy typing.....with a lot of questions. This document you filled out for your rifle....what is it called? I have some buddies that would love to do this....and I would not suggest it, personally. ETA: There a lot of things that don't make sense in your original post. |
|
As a former Military Police officer that has undergone customs training, and did customs while over in the sandbox, I am unfamiliar with any type of document that would allow you to take a personally owned weapon over to Iraq. Even if you did show me some type of official document allowing you to import the rifle from the US State Dept, guess what? I'm still confiscating the rifle, I take my orders from the military (specifically General Order 1A), not the State Dept. What is the name of this permit? ETA: A breakdown of General Order 1A General Order 1A restricts possession of certain items and conduct of certain activities by US Forces and civilians serving with, employed by or accompanying US Forces. Briefly, these include: • Privately owned firearms, ammunition and explosives • Entry into a Mosque without proper permission • Pornographic materials • Controlled substances and drug paraphernalia • Alcohol, except as purchased and consumed in accordance with installation policy • Gambling • Removing archaeological artifacts • Adopting animals as pets or mascots • Proselytizing any religion, faith or practice |
A form #4457 is for taking personal effects not made in the United States out of the country so that when you return you have proof that you are not trying to import an item that wasn't made here, you're proving that you previously owned the item. Most commonly this is used for cameras and electronics. A firearm can be registered this way using a form 4457, but you also have to obey any importation laws from the destination country.... |
|
www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/prohibited_restricted.xml#Firearms Firearms The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) regulates and restricts firearms and ammunition; and approves all import transactions involving weapons and ammunition. If you want to import or export weapons or ammunition, you must do so through a licensed importer, dealer, or manufacturer. Also, if the National Firearms Act prohibits certain weapons, ammunition, or similar devices from coming into the country, you will not be able to import them unless the ATF provides you with written authorization to do so. You do not need an ATF permit if you can demonstrate that you are returning with the same firearms or ammunition that you took out of the United States. To prevent problems when returning, you should register your firearms and related equipment by taking them to any CBP office before you leave the United States. The CBP officer will register them on the same CBP Form-4457 used to register cameras or computers. (See the section on Register Items Before You Leave the United States). For further information about importing weapons, contact the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, DC 20226; or call (202) 927-8320; or visit www.atf.gov ( Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ) . Many countries will not allow you to enter with a firearm even if you are only traveling through the country on the way to your final destination. If you plan to take your firearms or ammunition to another country, you should contact officials at that country's embassy to learn about its regulations. |
| I really dont care if you think its BS it happend I wouldnt do it again. And as for your General orders nobody cares but pougs I was not the only person over there with a personal weapon and the airforce customs guys we had didnt care at all. So for you Mr hard core mp I hope you dont lose any sleep because I wont I get my disability check on the first of every month |
So you bought 3 Springfield M1A's over 3 years And are upset only now because Springfield wants to repair it, just not the way you want them to? (even though it is usually over spec. ammo that results in ka-booms?) And also, that you not only ended up buying three M1A variants, you also shot the 7.62 through #2 even after knowing that it has caused failures in your previous similar firearm. How'd you get your second purple heart? |
Well I am inclined to believe that there is some type of mechanism for a person to take a rifle out of the country and return it as a lot of rich folks take personal firearms to Africa for hunting. However, I am a little shocked that you were allowed to take a commercial rifle to Iraq and use it. Plus, why would you purchase another SOCOM or any Springfield product after having one almost get you killed? |
hahaha, don't worry about it, I'm not losing sleep over it. Why would I lose sleep over a bs story that didn't happen? ETA: Can I give you my old platoon sergeant's phone number? The one thing I have never been accused of is being a hard-core MP, he'd be thrilled to hear it, maybe he could take some of my counseling statements back.... |
|
I wouldn't take a commercial rifle into combat, unless I persoanlly put 1000 rounds through it to know for sure it was worthy. Also knowing Springfeild Armory INC uses Cast parts for alot of things... I would carry it into combat. Not when I can have a USGI M14 with Forged parts. |
big +1 I still think this story smells funny... |
| If it sounds funny it usually is but.... I know 2 Private Contractors and 3 active duty military gents one is S.F. the other two grunts and from what I have heard from them it sounds like the Wild West over there! So that said just because something sounds funny to you does not mean it did not happen, and if this guy is a real vet who served his country with 2 purple hearts to show for it he deserves respect not ridicule. |
I do not doubt your story. I just can't believe that you would carry a weapon into combat without shooting it! Are you nuts? I won't carry a pistol for CCW unless it has had atleast 500 rds through it without a single failure of any kind. I wouldn't take any weapon into combat unless I trusted it with my life. That takes time and ammo. I am not questioning your honesty, but your judgement. |
Ok , let me get this strait. Instead of leaving your rifle at home and using a battle-proven issue weapon , you took a weapon to a war zone with 30 rounds on it? Why in hell would you want to do such a thing?
|
I don't know what is worse. The "I used a personal owned weapon in Iraq" story that we've heard on here countless number of times or..... if the story is to be believed, he bought an M1A, and it blew up in five rounds, then Springfield-Armory jerked him around and screwed him. So he went out and bought another one, which constantly jammed, and then after getting kicked in the nuts twice by S-Armory, he buys another one to take to combat with him (after mysteriously getting the ok to take it over) You tell me, which version is worse? He's either lying, or he took a weapon that he had major problems with twice before to combat.... |
Ah, I see The way you labelled them #1 through #3 is a little misleading, and #2 is the only one that suggests when you bought it in terms of the other two (you said "and then I bought") No need for calling me a dumb ass and resorting to personal attacks.... At least I can spell, and I was a member of the National Guard, not the Nation Guard. |
Nope--I believe you hung out in Taji and Baghdad. Your story smelled WAY too much of BS to be believable at the start. I know some folks that worked a Q-37 section on Taji while you were there. Heard plenty of stories about the 39th rolling around with hunting scopes jury rigged to their rifles. It's just a crying ass shame I have to base my now utter disrespect of the MODERN DAY 108th Infantry of the NY Army National Guard on a couple of platoons that were actually allowed to bring, and carry, privately owned weapons that have not been fired before. Some units I can see using their shit because they are smart enough to know how to do so. Allowing a leg NG unit to do so? Someone from the NY NG please prove me wrong. In fact OP--please provide us with the names of your chain of command so I can be sure not to trust any of these people if I see them in uniform in the future. As far as the modern "Springfield Armory" goes---I believe you, and I've never been a fan of their rifles. I do like my XD-45 though. |
|
Did your national guard unit require any sort of approval on commercial firearms that were privately owned before they could be taken into combat? I've seen a lot of national guard purchase various commerical items from approved lists, but never seen a bring any weapon you want policy. Perhaps you should bring this issue to the attention of those higher up in your chain of command so that this type of thing does not happen again. If you need a designated marksmanship rifle that fine, but it should be one properly inspected and tested by the national guard ahead of time. I'm also SHOCKED that Springfield would basically tell you to "F-yourself"...did you tell them your story about Iraq? About being a soldier there using their rifle? Perhaps if you posted some pictures on here of you with the SOCOM we could all act together in lighting a fire under Springfield's rear end. |

7.62x51 is specc'ed to a lower pressure then .308 so unless the leade was to short the bolt was flawed to begin with. I'd NEVER take ANY firearm I'd only shot 30 rounds thru to a war zone, especially if I was depending on it to keep my ass alive. It would have hundreds of rounds thru it before it ever left country, probably with as close to the ammo I would be using as possible. That said, I am much more a fan of the older M1As then the new one's, the parts were, save for the receiver, mostly USGI if you took your time and looked a bit. They were also put together a bit more consistantly, the demand was not as great and I'd bet more time was taken in assembly. Did you ever headspace or check the rifle with a go/no go gauge? does the military insist on checking a "private" weapon before it's taken to the field? I can't for the life of me understand why ANY military commander would not insist on that as a minimum, if it was allowed at all. In this case I guess "Milspec" would have meant something. |
Yeah, I gotta agree with that. ![]() They issued you an M14 and you chose to replace it with a commercially produced rifle you had only fired 30 rounds from?? ![]() Having never been in the military or in combat for that matter i cant really say to much about it but personally id have to be pretty damn sure a weapon isn't gonna fail me when my ass is on the line or it can stay at home and ill take my issued M14 with me just to be sure. ![]()

Of the many and and ...Only folks I know being issued M14s are designated marksmen. SO, you turn down an issued DM package with weapon to do DM work and you replace it with a 16" SOCOM II. Based upon the totality of what you have posted and from what I know to be true...I'm calling you a fucking liar. I spent 2 years in this shit hole and working on my 3rd. Never heard this complete bullshit. Go to the airsoft forum, maybe you can get those queers to believe your dumbfuck stories and steal honor over there. |

Here is what personal SA weilding weapons hero IMed me: Gives a snapshot of what we are dealing with here: Him: first thing go fuck yourself ass hole you act like your the only one to do more than one tour over there. and Bull shit on on DM's only having m14's we had one per squad I'm not your friend and don't have to lie to impress you I didn't ask you for your advise I've got over 17 years in the military to be called a liar by some poug as bitch like you who probably never even stepped outside the FOB. So take your opinion and stick it up your ass. Me: You call and think me a pogue and yet you feel you have to justify yourself to me. That is funny. Go post this on the open forum so the others can watch the trian wreck in slow motion. At least I had to balls to post my opinion in the open. Oh, and don't ever IM me again. Semper Fidelis |
