Not sure if this is the correct forum or not.  I moved a while back and have not had a firearms transferred to me in my new city.  The FFL in town requires payment for a transfer before faxing the FFL information to the sender.  I placed a backorder with a vendor and had to fax in the ffl paperwork.  I've never had to pay ahead of time and was curious if this is something unusual.

That's a new one for me.

I personally have never heard of paying before the transfer takes place.  I would find another FFL.  If there are no other gun shops in the area, don't forget about pawnshops.

If it doesn't work out I can always just do a chargeback.  I decided to use my visa for this very reason.

Most FFL's don't charge the transfer fee just to send a copy of their license to another dealer.  They usually will collect the fee before you fill out the paperwork and they run the check.  That way if the buyer is denied they still get paid.

I've done quite a few transfers but none since moving here and this is the first place I've heard of that charges up front before they even get the item to transfer.  They have the best transfer rate at $20 a transfer.  If I get my lower in the next month that would be great.  If they get banned I'll do a chargeback.

Sounds like a great idea as a business man.  You paid for a service, that includes sending a copy of their FFL off to the seller.  This dealer has completed his part of your bargain up to now and you give no reason to believe he won't continue on doing so.  If it is banned, if your sellers welches or whatever the transfer dealer still has done work on your behalf, no reason he should not be compensated for his time.
Jusy my opinion of course.

Seems so. Keeps out the rif-raf wasting your time sending FFLs all over the country. Not a problem for me, but if it was, this is the solution.
