 TNVC Training conducted a sold out Nightfighter 201 this weekend at the Hawaii of the Midwest, the Alliance PD Training Facility in Alliance, Ohio, 21-22 September 2024. This class was a great mix of active LE, SWAT EMS Medics and as a certain little short guy from NYC (Pat Rogers) would call Average Earth People. It is always refreshing to see people from all walks of life and professions getting their learn on at or near the apex of the Second Amendment training pyramid. We also executed a sold out Nighfighter 101 and Try Before You Buy this weekend in Alliance. We here at the Magic Night Goggles Emporium consider Alliance our home field, most of us grew up there under the tutelage of Pat and in follow on years, Joe Weyer. Joe runs one of the most feature rich training environments available. We consider him a close friend and mentor, and we plan on training there for a long, long time. Alliance offers the ability for this particular course to go internal and make it DARK early. This allows us to train earlier in the day and get complete with daily training objectives at a super reasonable time. The weather for this time of year in Alliance was surprisingly wonderful. No rain, temps in the low 70s during the day and low 50s at night. Since the bulk of this class was internal work so weather effects didn’t impact any or our work. Student equipment was a mix of department issue and personally owned goggles and MFALs, with monocular and binocular goggles present, green and white screen. Most of the class were Nightfighter 101 graduates with the rest being grads from other world class courses out there. This helped us mash the gas pedal all the way down and get after course objectives with not a ton of warm up. No issues were noted for NVG, laser or lights throughout the course. We DID have several weapon malfunction problems during the course. One gun choked on night one with an overage of bolt on accessories that did not allow magazines to lock into the receiver. The student was able to swap guns and get back into the swing of the class relatively easily but missed a chunk of the POI. We must resist the urge to bolt things to our gun that haven’t been selected based on “defining our requirements”. Do the parts in accordance with the TDP let me run the gun well? If the answer is yes, then we probably shouldn’t attach the widgets all over our receivers. Another student experienced NLTA projectiles stacking up in the barrel after we transitioned to NLTA on target training. This is hard to predict and sometimes happens in the best and most well-maintained rifles. If we do not see the effect we expect to (projectiles impacting our targets), this may be an indicator that the NLTA projectile(s) may be stuck in the barrel. Contrary to live fire, NLTA requires that the barrel and receiver have little to no lube to run. A quick trip to the bore rod and this problem was rectified. This course is an advanced technology and problem-solving class that will work your ability to manipulate different technologies on your weapons and the ones attached to your head. Switchology is a thing, where your equipment is mounted is a thing, how you are carrying (slings/pouches/chinstraps/etc) your equipment is a thing that all gets shaken out in this course from live fire to internal work. We often see students wanting to go fast in the dark inside structures, related to a startle response when we turn and see a person (target) in a dark room with us, and stab our rifles straight out at said target. We must trust flow drill and our illumination tool’s (white light and IR) ability to throw energy in an adequate manner while still not neglecting a deliberate scan or violating firearms safety fundamentals. This group definitely progressed through this learning curve and learning definitely occurred. Our students all had the “AHA” moment that all these technologies are complimentary and can all be used in conjunction with each other…yes…at the same time. This may fly in the face of commonly understood conventions, but if you can see everything you need to see, why wouldn’t we apply more energy either in the IR or visible spectrum at the same time. If you find yourself struggling to see, in the dark, apply more energy. Finally, students drive OPTEMPO and these guys absolutely rocked it. On time, in the right place, with the right gear and super positive learning attitudes made this class a joy to run. Well done gents!
