I own a few of those cheap generic $5 C-cell and D-cell flashlights.  I am contemplating getting a little higher quality light.  The Surefire G2 LED looks like it might be nice: compact, cheap (for a Surefire), LED so no spare bulbs needed, and long battery life.

I was just wondering if it would really be worth it over a 20 or so dollar LED Maglite or some such?  $65 seems a little expensive for a flashlight.

By the way, I plan to mainly use it for camping, things that go bump in the night, and other general purpose flashlight uses.

The G2 is a great little light.  I've got a couple of them and they are tough as nails and very reliable.  I don't have the LED versions, though.  LED's are nice because they are tougher, but they cannot emit IR light.  Though, it sounds like you wouldn't need it for this application, so I'd say go for it.

Once you buy a Surefire, you won't ever buy another brand.

+1.

I own two. My first was a regular 65 lumen G2. I ordered the LED upgrade for it. It is brighter (80 lumen), whiter, and lasts longer on a pair of batteries. My next G2 I bought as an LED to begin with.

These are excellent lights. I have had one an a LMT MRP using the surefire clamp and it has withstood a lot of rounds downrange and still works fine. Excellent light. Lightweight, high quality. I've also had aluminum surefires. These are lighter and just as bright. The only advantage the aluminum Surefires seem to have, is they make a better kubotan because of the greater weight and sharper edges on the front bezel.

The G2 can also be used using the "surefire method" with handguns. However if this is your intended use I would get the G2Z model instead. This has the Z2 Combat Light "shape" and is better for this application.

The Surefire G2 LED is a great flashlight!  I own two.  Like you, I thought it was a little expensive, but once you use it, you'll know where the extra money went.  Hands down it's one of the coolest little gadgets I own.  The illumination on that thing is amazing!

I've had the regular G2 nitrolon lights for a few years (?) something like that. I love 'em. After hearing about the LED lights by the people posted above, I just went to the Surefire sight and ordered replacement LED's for them. The only thing I haven't liked about the regular G2 is that the light is yellowish--it's not WHITE white like my Streamlight TLR-1. So hearing that these LED lights are WHITE light is good to go, for me.

**Just a note that I realized looking through the Surefire site: The new G2 LED light is $85 and only comes in black and yellow. I'm partial to OD, myself, and I wanted another flashlight. Well, the regular G2 flashlight is $36, and the LED upgrade is $39--which comes out to be $75--$10 less than the G2 LED. And if you buy it the way I bought it (regular G2 and then the upgrade), you have whole lot more color options. (Also, if you buy over $100 worth of stuff, UPS Ground shipping is free.) Just FYI!

I am using them now for weapon lights, so far they work really great. The G2 led with a Viking Tactics mount, much lighter than my SF M95.

Surefire G2 is my carry light. You can purchase a very cool dual pouch for your mag and for the G2 either face up or face down from Bladetech.
