How is the steyr aug quality today? I know during covid they had the stock cracking issue. I'm looking at buying a new one. Trying to find an older sabre or vltor era one is pretty much impossible it seems. Just trying to make sure it's worth it. Thanks

The saber and voltur ones are not hard to find you just have to look.

One just sold for way under market value. On gb Because it wasn't properly advertised or marketed, because they can't spell. So the search terms didn't come out right.

I have like 6 of the A3 Sabre and or vltor.

I'll drop you a pm or DM or whatever they're calling messages today.

I personally believe new current production Steyr AUG's are worth $1500-2000 depending on locale, sales, etc. The quality is subjective since its in it's own unique category, unlike AR15 that can go from $400-$2500.

The AUG build quality is very good imho. All the metal parts are done well. The plastic stock will likely have a tiny bit of play or movement between the stock and receiver. The trigger will suck compared to an AR. Regardless, reliability and accuracy are excellent and on par with the better AR's.

Please educate me.  I have an older Aug in A1 configuration.  The terms you use mean nothing to me and I've been of the opinion it wasn't worth nearly what I paid for it new back in the early 2000s.

The A1 one is a seperate thing. The Austrian original A1 are 100% amazing.

We are talking about 3 different forms of the A3. The regualr A3, then the A3 M1, and the A3 M2.

There were a few problems with a few stocks during covid on the M1.

There have been even fewer problems with rails on the M2.

The regualr A3 were of extraordinarily high quality. As noted above after that they slipped once or twice.

Other than an Austrian original the A3 which were contract mfgrd by Sabre or Vltor are teh higest quality AUG money can buy.

Also the machining and finsih is MUCH better on the A3 and the receivers are made differently. I forget the exact details and coudl be wrong but I think it had something to do with forging vs casting. The barrels were better and chrome lined, etc.

Who’s making the current production A3M2?

The post ban grey thumbhole stock AUGs, were they all Austrian?

The USR is 100 percent austrian and 98 percent perfect. The 2 peris because of the thumhole stock.

The current us guns are made by steyr us in the us either entirely or w various mixes of  steyr us steyr austria and us subcontractor parts.

A big reason why the A1 and USR still are so sought after as well as the A3 which had a u s made receiver and barrel by saber or voltur but then a lot of austrian parts.

So I think I have an Austrian made A1 style black aug.  Curious what they are worth?  I see all these new augs for lots less than I paid back in 2001 or whenever I got it.

Shit, I learned all kinds of things today.

In early Persian beliefs, the parīs were probably a class of evil spirits and only later received a positive reception.

Sounds like the USR to a T.

Approx 3-5k depending on condition accessories, original box of manual or not etc. And even the condition of the original box of manual , things like that.

My A3 M1 has been solid through several cases of 5.56 with no stock issues. From all accounts Steyr has been making things right for folks with issues. Sample size of one, but I really like the gun and other than an Aimpoint H1, a 3d printed brass deflector and a Gear Head Works FLEx single point sling adapter its been outstanding in all aspects without any additional modifications. Highly recommend the waffle mag version of this gun.
Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way!

Thanks.  I still have original box in perfect condition and all case candy etc.  Plus 10 original magazines.  Only thing missing is the little plugs that go into the optic when not using it.  Have only fired about 200 rounds of Swiss ammo thru it.  Might need to break it out and see if it is what I described and if I want to sell.  Nah.  Even though I hardly ever shoot it is kinda my choice if the zombies come as it has been flawless since I got it and I kept that case of Swiss ammo for just that weapon.  And I don't need the dosh.  But nice to know it hasn't been cratered in value with the release of home grown models.

Don't recall.  Feels like $4K was the number and thought it was special at the time.  Might have the receipt in the box but on my way out the door for doctor visits and can't check right now.

Police models WERE selling for an average of $4,500.00 back way back when.

OK now I'm curious.  Mine is serial #906SA4XX

It is black and has the permanent Swarozki scope.

Any way for me to find an ID based on the serial?

That's commonly believed and i think generally true but I  have seen credible people say the bbls weren't Australian and or only partially Australian.

I'll look at some of the proof marks on my usr.

Someone should compile a list of AUG's as far as quality and desirability.

I guess the original Austrian pre-ban is near the top of the list. Maybe the Op's black police model being the top of that pile for quality and desirability?

I guess the new US made AUGs made during covid (2021-2022?) may be the least desirable?

What are the expert opinions on ranking the various AUG versions?

I tend to agree with your thoughts,

I currently own…

A 40th Anniversary Steyr AUG (correct one, not one of the “parts guns”)
A Steyr AUG A2 (formerly a USR) MY FAVORITE!!
A Steyr USR

BTW, I owned a couple of Police AUG’s (Dealer price was $1,675.00 back when they were for sale)

I believe as of current, Steyr has corrected their cracking stock issue. If you purchase an A3M1 today, you should be fine.

I had a Covid era A3M1 AUG, and it never cracked. But I was concerned enough to call Steyr and inquire about a replacement. They understood and sent me a current production stock for free. Date stamped 2025.

My AUG has been worry free ever since.

What is considered the "cracking time period"? 2021-2022? Can we get date codes for the earliest known cracked stock and the latest know cracked stock?

I will try to peruse the cracked stock thread and see what dates they have. It would be very helpful for some folks to know if their rifle is in THE time zone.

The answer is we don't know.  We have seen cracked stocks from 2019 to late 2023.  Note new production guns can use old stocks.

To put this in perspective this timeframe is the entire production run of the mdrx.

Steyr has not made any public announcements about the issue or affected lots.  We only know from community samples here which is some fraction of the affected stocks.

I just think of the stocks as Covid stocks. That general time period. But maybe some stocks cracked after that period. We may never know.  But I'm pretty sure all stocks made in 2024 or 2025 are fine. If you get an AUG with a covid era stock, Steyr will replace it with a new one free of charge. It doesn't even have to be cracked. Just from that date period.

This is NEWS. I probably have 4 AUG stocks made in 2023 (I'll have to check the date stamps). I bought 2 rifles then bought each a spare stock due to reading about the cracking problem. I have not had any problems with about 1500 rds per gun.

I believe the cracked stock issue has been fixed.

My issue with Steyr is trying to get a hold of someone that knows anything ... it made me sell my AUG ... after sales service from them is suboptimal in my experience ... that was several years back so hopefully they have improved ... but I am not taking another $1700 swing to see if so ...

Switched back to IWI and been very happy since ...

FYI, the issue isn't whether or not they know anything it is whether or not they are allowed to disclose anything related to the crack to the public.  We know that the cracked stocks are replaced under warranty and there is little to no chance they don't track these metrics.  Within the first year of the issue that might be an excuse, 5 years of continuous defects and not knowing why they exist is either gross negligence/lack of understanding of basic manufacturing/design practices OR a coverup.

I'll leave it to the reader to reason which one is most likely.

I ordered my A3 M1 from PSA back in August ‘23…

https://palmettostatearmory.com/steyr-aug-a3-m1-nato-extended-rail-5-56x45-rifle-mud-augm1mudext.html

…so I’m fairly certain I’d fall under the umbrella of potential stock cracking.  That being said my round count is pretty low, over 500 and less than 1K with duty ammo and I’m not seeing any issues.  If Steyr is amenable to replacing them it sounds like a good idea out an abundance of caution, just curious if there’s a specific serial number range that they’re looking for…?

I would expect them to have a specific serial number or lot number of affected stocks.  I do not believe they have made that information public, nor have they admitted that an issue exists.

I was talking about necessarily about the cracked stock issue ... I am talking about Steyr USA in general ... I couldn't get them to answer questions, I couldn't get them to issue a service ticket to check my AUG ... There was one lady that answered the phone, seemed no idea what or how things are ... transfers me to someone that knows ... they never answered. Left voicemails ... never got a return call ... this went on for almost 3 months ...

Steyr USA customer service, in my opinion, SUCKS and they lost me as a customer forever ...

It's hit or miss in my experience. I have had great CS with an immediate answer when I called but other times I had to call repeatedly, leaving messages etc.  But I have always gotten through and got 100% squared away eventually.

I think Steyr is a small shop with a few employees who's primary job is building rifles and answering phones is secondary.

p.s. My CS calls to Steyr were for losing an extractor spring during cleaning, ordering small parts, or asking technical questions.

You BOUGHT new stocks for your AUGs?? You know Steyr will replace your stock for free. You just gotta call them and let them know.

My A3 Vltor receiver. It has Vltor engraving marking inside.

Not sure what was causing the plastic stock fractures. I always believe it was a plastic formula issue from that time frame or a particular mold was causing the defects.

Never had any issues with AUGs I had played with before getting mines. The only Steyr I have issues is my GB pistol.

I am very happy with my AUG. Bought one that had a mfg date of 5/20, it developed the infamous crack in the normal place after less than 300 rounds. Contacted Steyr and they took care of me. Less than a week turnaround and had a new stock after sending old one back. I am very happy with my AUG.

It is easily one of my favorite guns to shoot.

Update on my Nato mag catch and top rail issue.

Sent a new email to Steyr, and this time Grant replied, and got me replacement parts asap. Installed them to day and I now longer have issues if I put upwards pressure on the mag where it would jam on the feed lips.

Top rail seems to be the correct size now, and I can tighten stuff securely now.
