Dudes, Just picked up an '89 production Springfield Armory SAR48. Fell in love with the thing the minute I spotted it on my gun shop's "for sale" rack. This thing looks like an M60 for God's sake! Anyway, the only thing it came with is a mag (20 rounder). I bought 4 more and 200 rounds of NATO ball. Called Springfield to get a manual (on the way). Can you guys tell me anything I should know? Troubles/pitfalls? How the hell do you use an adjustable gas system? The receiver is Imbel, have no idea who made the bbl., it's also HEAVY as hell! One more thing...the safety selector switch is a 3 position unit...safe/semi/semi(confirmed w/firing test-the sales guys were concerned also!). The indications on the switch look like at one time it WAS full auto capable(safe-semi-full)-the ATF being what it is, how did this pass their muster? Hell, they get nervous and jerky with a FAKE selector switch on an M1A, for God's sake. Greetings to you ATF types perusing the boards, BTW. ![]() Thanks in advance. John |

Tarfu64, On the gas system, set it on 3, then load a single round in the mag and fire, the bolt should lock back. If it does, then start going up on the setting (towards 5) and testing. Once the bolt no longer locks back, then back off on the setting by a click and your gas setting is set. If you start to run the rifle dirty and the rifle jams, give the setting another click down (towards 1), to work with the dirty action. The idea is to have the gas system bleeding off as much gas as it can, yet still cycle the action. If you set it to strong, the rifle will lose some accuracy, due to the bolt opening too soon. Dano |
The SAR48s don't have numbers on the little wheel to adj. the gas as standard FALs. I would advise you turn the little wheel until it is wide open, ie not covering the little hole in the top, and firing one round at a time, close down one notch at a time, until extracts and locks the bolt back, and then close down one more to insure functionality with all ammo. |
