The Shellback Tactical Banshee is a popular piece of kit used by citizen shooters, police, and some Special Forces. One of the biggest complaints of the vest is the poor weld between rifle stock and shoulder strap. When shouldering a rifle, the Banshee’s large shoulder buckles slide the rifle stock off of the shoulder and into the bicep. To create a better shoulder weld for rifles, the shoulder straps on the Banshee need to be as low profile as possible, also it’s helpful when using the Shellback Tactical padded shoulder pads with this mod. The mod and the improved shoulder pads create a comfortable and lower-profile position for a rifle stock to sit solidly. The pictures below will show the hardware I modded while experimenting and the off-the-shelf parts I ended up using on my vest.

The hardware I used to experiment with the shoulder mod is ITW Nexus and SKD PIG.

Early on I used standard ITW Nexus hardware found in their various buckle replacement kits. I took ladder locks and made cuts similar to the cut outs on existing tri-glide hardware. The hard part of this mod is cutting off the original buckles, the disclaimer is when they’re gone, they’re gone.

The ITW hardware was a proof of concept that proved that the Banshee could get low-pro shoulder straps. Shouldering my rifle with this mod was far more comfortable than using the factory buckle design.

The first step is cutting off the female buckle off. The modded tri-glide serves as a cinch for the Banshee webbing strap. The ladder lock was intended to secure the webbing strap so slipping isn’t a problem and the Banshee can still have adjustable shoulder straps.

Early field tests proved that shouldering a rifle was more comfortable and stable with the new mod. However, since I was using custom cut parts, the vest wasn’t as secured as factory buckles. Honestly I’d have more piece of mind if parts we’re readily available and “field” ready. Doing extensive research, SKD’s PIG line offered a good source of inspiration and source of “field” ready hardware.

I tried each type of hardware beginning with the ITW G-hooks, then the SKD PIG buckle strap and G-hook, and finally the SKD PIG D-ring cinch and G-hook.

Before:

After:

The SKD PIG D-ring cinch with G-hook worked the best. Since the G-hook was stamped steel, it is virtually unnoticeable and indestructible. The double D-ring cinch on the SKD PIG strap allowed for maximum adjustability of the Banshee straps. Adding some 100mph tape to tie down the excess webbing adds more security.

I ordered the shoulder pads from Shellback Tactical directly... 4 months ago... They literally just arrived a couple of weeks ago. Last time I spoke with LC Industries (Shellback Tactical parent company), they were fully stocked in all colors. I'd try to get some ASAP as the backorder times from Shellback suck.

trying to keep Banshee Modification in one thread.

here's an idea:

Just want to share this set up I got from Down Range Chest Rig/Armor Interface Quick Attach.  I used it to attach my D3CR.
I also moved the side connection on my support side, as a mean of silent/ QA
instead of the Velcro. The strong side has the Velcro semi-permanently attached.

Hope that makes sense.

Ares Armor Silencers do a better job IMHO. You would just need to stitch in a strip of velcro or get a molle velcro patch to pull back the cummerbund.

I was going to say that Ares Armor had a mod that is "field" ready as it were. Although I think your mod with the buckles would be great for the detachable front panels or 3rd gear.

So basically you picked THIS up, cut the female buckle off, removed the male buckle and looped the webbing through the d-ring?  I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Thanks.

Thx for the tip. I ordered it and works just fine for what I need. You could get 2 and do both side if needed. the down range gear looked like it would work just as well. ordered ares due to price

Yup! That's the part I used. So far it's the only off-the-shelf part that I've found that will work with this mod.

I'm trying to get familiar with the Banshee, so I take it to and from work, minus any gear.

So I finally got my HSGI Bleeder/Blowout Pouch/ IFAK, so I incorporated into the Banshee cummerbund on strong side the.

underneath the HSGI you can still see the male end of the Down Range Gear’s Chest Rig/ Armor Interface Kit, ready for the D3CR.

I know it looks uncomfortable with that shear, but, it hasn't stopped me from my one hour driving to and from work.

Plus I gain more respect for the LEOs and guys overseas with all their gears while driving.

My experience riding the deus in the Corps PALE in comparison on what y'all wear nowadays.  I tip my hat off.

While well made my these buckles are a very poor design. If I knew the banshee was this bad for rifle use I would not have bought it

I may have to try this mod from the OP.

Roecar, Are those the Shellback factory Side plate pockets? What is stuffed in them?

I have a Banshee that I purchased in 2011.  I went to look at it this weekend, it it seems that I have 1 1/2" buckles in the shoulders, but the photos in this thread all look like they are 1", as well as the SKD hardware.

Can anyone confirm this, or am I just crazy?

You're correct. 1.25" straps on Banshee, 1" hook / D ring.

Awesome.  Thanks for the replies.

Anyone have any tips on how to cut that buckle off?

I squeezed the side of the buckle through one of the side slots, and angled it to expose part of the buckle where the strap was looped through.
Used a pair of dikes to cut it off.

I squeezed the buckle through one of the side holes and then used a pair of loppers to snap the plastic off. Mine was fairly easy to get off. My wife's on the other hand was very tight and needed a ton of dexterity/cussing to expose the buckle.

Depending which part of the mod you like and install, the size of the Banshee webbing is irrelevant. I found the double D-ring and G-hook combo works the easiest. You can use the other versions of hardware I've listed but the mod becomes more complex with needed sewing modifications. I choose the PIG hardware that was as "drop-in" as possible.

Hope this helps.

WOW!

I just finished with one side, and I'm surprised that I finished under 5 minutes.

The rear strap/ male end /3 prong was easy to slip off.

The front buckle/ female end was a little challenging, lucky, my fingers were small enough to access the side opening.(as seen in Roecar's picture)

I just snipped it with this  Husky snipper (???), enough to slip the closed strap off.

Then I slipped the G hook inside the strap, hooked it, then, proceeded to loop the rear strap to the double loop.
Will add pictures later

So far digging the difference. With original buckle, it's around 3/4 of an inch.  Now it's les than 1/4 of an inch.

I do apologize, since I'm working with one hand here
you can see how slimmer this modification will do for your Banshee

I tried squeezing it so you can definitely how thinner it is

hilarious video here

Anybody consider cutting off the shoulder portion entirely just leaving the straps themselves? Would this fuck it up too much? All that excess material seems very unnecessary and bulky. Especially for those of us with HSGI shoulder pads.

I examined the carrier prior to this mod, even thought about having a seamstress/seamster make modifications. It's a lot of work to say the least. The problem with cutting the shoulder sections off, is the exposed threads and fabric. With hard-use, I'd expect a lot of fraying and even compromising the integrity of the plate pockets.

Part of the reason why my mod turned out this way was creating a drop-in solution as much as possible.

***EDIT: Added some pictures of how my Banshee strapping is set-up***
Just to give some perspective how my Banshee is set-up, I am 6'1" 220lbs. The top of the front plate is just below my sternum for maximum protection for my heart.

I'm lucky that the extra length of strap can be threaded and cinched through the existing webbing loops on the Banshee. As such, the strap is secured from coming loose in anyway. You can see where the end of the extra strapping is locked in by the shoulder strap webbing.
