I posted this on build it yourself, and they told me to come here.

I noticed the rubber grips on my Ruger Security Six have a cut-out on the bottom and through it you can read the serial number on the butt of the frame.
I am building a bullpup to house a Ruger 10/22 and my question is if I have to cut a window so you can see the serial number?
I am going to do it anyway, just so I don't have to spend a night in jail or take the gun apart to show the number.
Does anyone know if there is a ruling on this, or is it just good practice?

IIRC the Muzzle-lite doesn't have provision for a SN window. Neither do a lot of the Side saddles for shotguns.

I've got a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870 with saddles that cover the SN. the 870 is a wingmaster, so the cutout on the plate for the SN doesn't even match where the SN is.

There is no requirement for YOU to make the serial number visible, simply not to deface it.  There is a requirement for the manufacturer to make one visible.  Often on pre GCA of 1968 guns the serial number (if there was one) was under the grips.

Thanks guys! I will leave the cut-out off. The main reason is that in the bullpup design, it would have the shooter's eye close to where a ruptured case gas could cause an injury.

I suppose you can always stamp, engrave, etch, etc the serial number onto the part that's covering it.
