I'm looking at add-ons for the Stg58 I ordered.  My first choice for optics would be an ACOG.  I'm weighing that against the budget and it's on the edge.

What would be options of more economical, but still reasonably effective, optics? (Yes, I realize that is a very subjective question).

I suggest you look at the Eotech/Holosite.

The FAL is going to kick more than an AR so dont for get about eye relief and the butt stocks are longer too.  It also depends on what your going to do with you FAL

I use my FAL for urban combat so I went with something small - a 4x IOR Valdada M2 sitting in see though rings is on my list. Should run about $400 with rings.

What about  going with what was the standard on the inch guns? buy yourself a SUIT, and cut off the "ears" on the topcover to fit your metric .
