All the years I've owned firearms, I've finally splurged in a gun safe. I've always been an apartment dweller and single/no kids. Now I'm married, with a house, still no kids, BUT nieces and nephews find their way over from time to time (which I don't mind having them over), but it was time to secure my shit! So I got a deal off market place, 48(ish) gun safe, Cannon. I was hoping it was concrete lined, but it's just lined with a drywall like material. It'll still do the job. Now the negative, the safe had Sat in the previous owners wet basement for 2 years. When I say wet, I mean WET. The exterior paint is bubbling in spots. The metal spindle(?) is rusted up. There's mold inside on the felt. I have my work cut out for me! Now before you go and say "why the hell did you buy it?!!?" honestly, the price seemed fair, the guy was clearly down on luck and had a young daughter. He certainly needed the $ and I feel good about myself for buying it when I'm sure many had passed it up. So my plans are to sand blast the exterior and repaint it. Coming to see if anyone can recommend an appropriate paint for the exterior of a safe. I've reached out to Cannon about replacing the spindle, but I'm also prepared to blast an paint it. For the interior, I'm debating ripping out all the drywall boards, replacing the felt, and reinstalling them as well. Any tips or tricks or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks |
Any of the good crinkle texture or splatter paints intended for automotive trunks. Use a good quality metal etching primer over the bare steel and you shouldn't have any problems.

Industrial Rustoleum. Thin it with acetone and spray it. No hardener needed for that application. I sprayed my exterior security door with it and it looks like it was powder coated. It is a much more severe application that spraying a safe. |

About 25 years ago, I built my own safe. When I was done with the exterior, I sent it to the local sand blaster for blast and prime. Once I had it back, I rattle canned it with Rust-oleum Gloss Protective Enamel. During a move, the paint suffered some scuffing, just clean and touch up with the same can.
