Hello
I was not sure where to post this question if it needs to be moved thats no problem.  I was thinking of getting a bolt action rifle in .223. My thought is that. I have quite a bit of .223 ammo so if I bought a rifle in .223  I would be set for ammo. I already have an AR15. My question is what is a good reasonably priced .223 and what should I look for. Is there any makes to stay away from.
Thanks

What do you call "reasonably priced?"

I would recommend a Savage bolt action in.223. You can safely shoot .556 NATO or .223 and they are the most accurate out of the box rifles out there. If you are buying new, the accutrigger is pretty awesome. And they are reasonably priced. Just my 2 cents.

Under 500 but the cheaper the better. I would go over 500 if if I had too but really just want a best value gun.

Yes I will be buying new. I would like something with a good heavy barrel though.
Thanks

Hello all
I was looking in the local classified and found this gun Ruger M77 MARK ll in 223 he is asking 575.00. Is that too much or what would you guys think to offer. I am unable to find it on the Ruger site so I am unsure of its value new. I do know I can get a very nice Savage for 575.00. Anyone know its value or how good this gun is.
Thank you

I would rather have the Savage; I like the Accutrigger better than the Ruger's trigger.

I had a Browning A-Bolt in 223 Remington with the "Boss" monstrosity on the end of the barrel.  The rifle was beautifully made, but the BOSS required too much "tuning" between brands and types of ammo.  I also found the rifle to be no more accurate than my AR15's (with 55gr ammo).

In the end, I decided that I was only interested in 30 caliber bolt actions.  Since that time I've sold all my centerfire bolt actions because my semi-auto 223/5.56 and 308/7.62 rifles are just as accurate and reliable (for how I use them) with the added benefit of "fire power" and "magazine capacity".

Unless you're wanting a heavy barrel precision rifle (like a Remington 700 Police in 223) I'd ask yourself why?

Thanks for the reply I was honestly thinking of a heavy barrel because that is what my dad always bought when he was still alive. But he did alot of hunting.

Look at the Marlin x7 series.  They have both light and heavy barrels in .223.  I don't like the tang safety on the Savages.  If you shoot from field positions you often have to break your grip to take the safety off and it is nested just enough to make it difficult with gloves in cold weather.  YMMV

I just saw and held a Savage hog hunter .223. It is a very nice gun but as some said it is very heavy. But I guess thats the whole point of a heavy barrel .   The price is 499.00 I was hoping it would be a bit cheaper but I guess thats the going price around here.

$499 is on the steep side. A gun shop near me that is pretty proud of their stuff has one for $450. Bud's has it for $424 if you pay with a credit card, or $412 if you pay with cash/check.

You might find a better bargain in the used market to get more in your price range.  The bolt rifles rarely get the use to wear anything out unless it's a prarie dog rifle, otherwise all you have to watch out for is neglected care.

Savages are great, older ones were clunky but functional, the newer ones I think rival any of the other comparable makes.
Remingtons are great, especially the older ones.   I kick myself for not buying a lightly used M700 police tactical with the short barrel that was under $500 (a long time ago).

A tikka might be an option but I think their prices have gone up sharply from when they were first introduced here.

The Axis in .223 is a light rifle.  My opinion, too light for the recoil of .308 or .30-06, but the .223 would be just about right.  The Axis has what I would call a medium weight barrel so it's reasonably accurate and they are in the $325 or so range.

Yeah, I am a wuss.  My 110FP in .30-06 does not kick as much because it's heavy.

The lightness would be nice for my daughters to be able to handle it a bit better but it is a 2 sided coin because a heavier gun has less recoil.

Well I accidently ran across one of these Marlin X7 rifles at my local gun shop. I was pretty inpressed with it. Over the last few days I have been able to see all the guns posted here and then some. I picked this Marlin up and pretty much liked it right away. I also looked at the price and it is 309.00 it is the cheepest one I have looked at also. I think I am going to go back and buy this gun in the morning. I appreciate everyones help and advice I really honestly never thought I would like the Marlin My main reason is it is in my price range and I do like the feel of the gun even if it is heavy. I also like the heavy barrel on it.
The Link below is not the place I am buying it from but it gives the specs and a pic of the gun. I am buying it from a local shop 3 blocks from me. I should of went there first.

I'll chime in for the Savage. I have had a few of them over the years. I at one time had a Remington 700 and a Savage 110? in .223. I worked up hand loads for both of them to get a good idea of accuracy. I sold the Remington.
Savage has an alternate "budget" brand called Stevens. They lack the Accu-Trigger, but are solid budget rifles. Another benifit of the Savage/Stevens line is you can re-barrel one at home, no gunsmith needed. You could even change calibers, to an extent, right at home.

This is your answer imo.  They are great rifles, but more importantly, they have a good action if you choose to rebarrel down the road.  I am by no means a bolt rifle smart guy, just passing on what I have seen by some of the 'precision' guys I had the privilege of shooting with

I really don't think the .223 in that rifle will kick much, not like .308 or .30-06.
