I am looking for some pistol and AR-15 magazine pouches for my belt and have no clue what I am looking for. I’m an old school guy trying to get with the new school cool.

I thought I would run some surplus M4 pouches but I feel like the MOLLE webbing will eventually give and not be as useably over time. I’m running a Condor LCS belt for now but I will upgrade the belt at some point in the future. I feel like I’m going to like this style of setup.

Are there pouches I can get that doesn’t use the MOLLE webbing?

Any of these pouches on Amazon? If not, recommend me a good place to get them.

I want to run two pistol mags and one to two AR mags.

Are taco pouches what I’m looking for?

Are there any pouches that use a locking mechanism without having to use MOLLE?

Is Krydex an okay brand?

Thanks for any and all info.

Krydex is a china brand and is about the same price as good American made stuff with all the price hikes lately.

Esstac is really made well and good people.
Here's some links to get you what you need.
You'll need some of these to attach them to the belt.
https://esstac.com/malice-clips---fight-light/
Generally you'll need the short ones.

Pistol pouches
Rifle pouches

Thank you both! I couldn’t remember that brand. I appreciate the help and will be ordering some.

Who makes the ones that look like polymer or Kydex? Is it Cry or Hailey?

I like the BFG pouches, I use the pistol version for daily carry but like the rifle versions more if that makes sense.
I have an Esstac double pistol mag pouch but have barely used it (bought it with the belt clips for normal belt usage, don't like the clips). I use a JSTA pouch with an insert for most of my shooting guns stuff. I bought a similar 2xAR pouch from Midwest Armor but haven't used it yet, it's well made but seems overly bulky and the belt pass through and molle should go all the way across the back. Shepherd Associates has something like that that looks a little leaner. It looks like all these belt pass throughs will work with your belt.

These are interesting.

There's usually several different pouches on the EE.

One-wrap velcro is perfectly good for attaching pouches to a belt.

Put it exactly where you want it.

This.  Esstac.

There are other pouches that work  -  HSGI taco pouches for instance.  But Esstac is the 'go to', is a good company, and they aren't expensive.  I personally think they are the best out there.  There ARE a half dozen other options out there that do work though.

Get the double pistol mag pouch with the gap.

Then a couple of rifle magazine pouches.

Or you can get the double pistol mag pouch with a rifle mag pouch attached and a second stand alone pouch, if you know you will be running rifle magazines in there.

And this.  Like I mentioned in the other thread.  Works perfect with esstac pouches.

If you have old Tactical Tailor magazine shingles, (or some of the similar ones) - Esstac makes their plastic inserts that slide in and work just fine for rifle magazines.  I converted all of mine with their inserts.  A few oldschool pistol mag pouches work similar with pistol mag inserts from them, but those are hit and miss.

Thanks everyone. A lot of good info and I’ll be looking into it all.

I do like the idea of using one wrap for pouches. Can it support the weight of loaded AR mag?

Also the one style that caught my eye is made by a Chinese company on Amazon. They clone things. It’s IDOGEAR and it’s a hybrid style pouch. I’ve seen something like this from a big brand name but can’t find it now.

This is the Amazon link.

The attachment system on those sucks and end up failing.

STOP BUYING CHINESE RIPOFFS

Esstac, BFG and Unobtanium Gear pouches are not expensive. There are Esstac sellers (and I think BFG) on Amazon if you want a quick delivery. If it's a more expensive item like a Spiritus JSTA pouch just buy one used.

^^ This.

Esstac pouches are NOT expensive for US made stuff.

I've handled alot of the chinese pouches of this kind of thing, and they are not anywhere near as nice, and not THAT much less expensive.

I don't mind playing around a little with chinese gear - I'm curious from the maker standpoint if nothing else - but for most things, it's not worth it to cheap out.

Thanks everyone. I found some Esstac on Amazon and have them in my cart. I will also use one wrap to secure them.

I’m only buying Chinese gear to see what I like and don’t like. I don’t want to spend a lot to find out I hate something and take a beating reselling it. And this belt can be used as a training belt too.

Any idea who makes pouches like the IDOGEAR pouches I posted above?

G-Code Scorpion pistol mag pouches are my preferred pouch these days. They fit any pistol mag, and unlike the Kywi pouches metal pistol mags will not squirt out of them.

I was just coming here to say I found the brand or brands.

How are G-Code? I see someone says they like them above. I also like that they will fit multiple style of magazines.

How about SKD? They have something similar.

The Agilite is interesting but I just stumbled across that pouch. I know nothing about them.

I like the G Code scorpion pouches as well.  IMO they are better than the HSGI Tacos.  They have a grippy texture on the interior to help hold the mags.

I like the idea of the G- Code pouches and I think I may invest in them. I’m trying the knock off to see how they work and feel while knowing the G-Code brand will be better quality. I also like that Blade Tech products seem to support these style of pouches with clips and belt clips.

@OlympicArmsFan the spiritus jsta with unobtanium insert is pretty gangster on a Belt. My belt config is (from the buckle counter clockwise as I’m wearing it.  Esstac double gap mag pouch, jsta with 1 rifle & 1 pistol, BFG single mag pouch.

I love the jsta bc I get a little storage & can keep some batteries, phone, & ear plugs in there.

Thanks for the recommendation on Shaw Concepts. I’ll check them out.

I just got in the IDOGEAR knock offs of G-Code. They are actually nicely made. The only downside is the clips. I will be ordering G-Code Scorpion pouches and they are also on Amazon. I’ll be looking at other places to order. They are rather expensive but I get why.

I also watched some videos about G-Code and the IDOGEAR brand. Someone took one wrap and made screw hole openings for it to replace the clips.

I wonder if Malice clips could be done this way or if the pouch would move and wobble.

I've seen people use the older, 1st gen MALICE clips with screws though them before, they seemed to work.

(the older ones are the usually black, all square, not 'waved' clips)

It depends on where the screw holes are vs. the malice clips though.  I'd also shock-cord the pouch on with a piece of gutted paracord, run like MOLLE,  in case it comes off the clip.  I do that with all pouches btw.

I'd also use a washer with the screw for a wider 'hold' onto the clips.

That’s a good idea about the shock cord and the washer. I’ll look at doing that. I didn’t realize how far gear has come and changed. It’s been years since I bought a piece of kit. Maybe five to six years and that was my chest rig. I was using an ALICE belt and pouches for a belt setup and wanted something modern.

I guess I could look at zip ties too. I did that with M16 pouches on my ALICE belt for years.

Thanks for the info.

Nothing wrong with ALICE gear  - with a bunch of mods    it's just out of date compared to the new stuff, which is significantly more comfortable.

Gear has come a LONG ways, but 99% of it is just expanding and modifying and improving on comfort / usability of the basics that ALICE and the chicom chest rigs provided.

The really big improvements in gear have been in the pack systems, to be honest.  And armor itself.

Modern packs and specifically their suspension systems have SIGNIFICANTLY improved since the 90's  (even classics like the ALICE packs - which still have a place - have had improvements since then)  And armor plates have gotten significantly less heavy and usable.

The key to all of it though, is figuring out what you need to carry and the role you will be carrying it in - and then putting together a system where it all works together in a way that all the pieces become one system, and don't end up fighting each-other and causing problems. Alot of people try to just throw together this and that because they are cool or that's simply what they have or are told to get, and it ends up not working with XYZ part of their kit.  IE, the pack doesn't fit right because it's a cool guy Mystery Ranch ruck (that is awesome by itself) and they are trying to wear a set of full on belt kit.  etc.

That is very true. I’m of the old school mind. I’m 52 years old and my body is broken. I need back surgeries and I’m told lifting over 10lbs could paralyze me. I went from a plate carrier to a chest rig and a belt setup. I want to carry everything and the kitchen sink with it too. But I know I can’t. I know I won’t be getting into a run and gun battle. It’s not my roll.

My new belt setup will work for me and it will end up being a good piece of kit. I just have to get out of the mindset of carrying to much crap.

I will also use ready wrap to place them where I need to. G-Code is also just to wide but man I love the pouches.

By the time you have any quantity of loaded magazines, “belt” carry is not feasible.

Really?  My Tac Tailor pouches seem like they'd be too crammed with kiwis in.

I've used Esstac mag pouches, I don't really like them.  They're heavier and bulkier than many.

Great retention, and easy reinsertion of mags which is nice in training, but I'm just not crazy about the bulk & weight.

I primarily use Tac Tailor & BFG. Excellent retention,  light, they just work.

I run BFG singles on top of Tac Tailor pouches, for rifle, on PC and belt, for "plussing up" when needed.

BFG double pistol mag pouch on the belt is excellent, very streamlined.

I can carry 4 rifle mags on the belt if wanted, no big deal at all.

Yea, I've done it with regular TT shingles and fight light ones.  I have an OG early 2000's shingle on my 'beater around the property belt' along with a couple of OG Eagle single pistol mag pouches that I pulled the closing flap off of.  I have KWYI inserts in all 3 of those.  That belt gets more use than all my other belts, and it's worked fine.  Yes, the rifle pouches are tight with the insert in there, but I think it's the height of the pouches more than anything.  They work fine.

I generally don't run the ESSTAC pouches on anything but my belts, so the bulk and weight don't bother me.  I run either regular shingles (though as mentioned, you CAN put the inserts in them too) or more recently, I've gone back to flapped pouches on main chest rig and my plate carrier.  The only one I'm running something like the ESSTAC is I have my Haley micro rig for home defense, and I fabbed up some DIY inserts from Kydex to put in there.  I think for home defense stuff, a small chest rig with a couple mag pouches with ESSTAC style inserts are outstanding.

I like the idea of the BFG pouches on top of the shingles, I've seen you with those before.  However, I hate elastic for mag pouches.  I've seen them wear out too quickly and lose their retention.  I guess if you replace them on a regular basis, that's fine.  But I'm cheap, lol.

Yeah, I'm cheap too!  I agree that it seems the elastic approach shouldn't last long, I've done my damndest to wear out 3 Ten Speed single rifle and one double pistol, and while they are showing their age a bit, still going strong.

The one on the front of the PC gets a beating, going prone & IMTing, showing alot of wear, but somehow still intact.

I love the way they flatten when empty.

I replaces the double pistol mag pouch on my main belt with an Esstac double for 8 months or so, to try it out.  Damned thing just stuck out too far, just didn't "mesh" with things.

Gave it a fair shake though.  For shits & gigs threw each one on the scale when switching back, definite weight difference.

Similar experience with rifle mag pouches up front, used them for only a few weeks, and said hell no...heavier, measured a full 0.3" thicker than the Tac Tailor, just bugged the shit outta me.

I know you of all people understand what ounces equal!

There's some truth to this. Everyone eventually finds that balance point where a feasible battle belt requires a harness, which kind of defeats the purpose of a battle belt for some uses. I personally try to limit the battle belt mags to two rifle mags, sometimes I'll push the limits to four PCC mags. Don't ask me how I've found that balance point...

I now prefer much more streamlined battle belts.

If I need more mags or kit, I have a few PLCE type rigs to grab (JayJays, Diz, etc.).

For regular pants belt, you can just use the Esstac Kywi belt loop attachments through the MOLLE loops. These just thread onto any pants belt and are very secure for running a couple mags with your regular clothing.

Thanks for all the information everyone. My esstac pouches will all be here sometime Monday. I will get the one wrap ready and figured out. My EDC holsters will work until I can figure a better solution.

The most important things about civilian gear, IMO, is that it is scaleable and that you train in it.

I shoot a two gun in armored class about once a month.

I will have to look for that TQ pouch. I have a couple of SOF Tourniquets and a couple NAR tourniquets. I really need to figure out good mounting solutions for them. I pocket carry a SOF daily with a RATs. I also have a couple of RATs on my chest rig. I know they are hated but really easy to carry and stash and use.

I like your belt setup. And all of your gear too.

I agree. Training in the gear you plan to fight with is important. Right now I can only dry fire but I do wear my chest rig when doing so with rifle. My EDC setup too. I didn’t have a battle type belt until now. Until I have can get to the range I’ll be dry firing a lot.

I’m also in Virginia and going outside with my gear will be a bit of a problem for the first time come July 1st. They freaked out a bit when I did some arts and crafts projects on my rifles. It was funny at the time but now it could become a problem.

Here's something a little different than what you're asking about, but another option.

I highly recommend the Spiritus Systems JSTA pouch with Unobtanium Gear SLEDs mag insert on a belt.

It holds a rifle mag and a pistol mag but also gives you a general purpose pouch without taking up a lot of room.

I absolutely love mine and use it more than anything else on my belt throughout the day.  I always keep a flashlight and multi tool in it and there's still room for other odds and ends you find yourself needing a short term place to stow.  Some examples would be a couple of empty mags, cell phone, a couple of loaded mags, snacks (), etc.

I'm in and out of mine all the time when I've got my belt on around the farm, which is pretty often.

It's kinda pricey, but we'll worth thinking about adding to your belt.  I can't imagine not having one after using it for awhile.

Nice pouch. I will have to check that one out. I was going to put a small USMC SAW pouch on my belt for snacks. I get low sugar at times. Where I go and shoot is on my grandparents land who have passed away so no one lives there. I’m miles from food or help. That pouch is a good idea.

I have piles of those and I hate them. The lack of ability to adjust tension is a PITA if you go from glock to anything else. The contour for the mag catch on a metal AR mag grinds away plastic and is a mess.

The rest of their gear is great.

TACOs are less bad, but have a lot of parts for what they do.

I prefer some form of kydex pouch.  T Rex has a decent one.
