I have had the replacement barrel for probably two years , maybe more. It's a Criterion from CMP. How does one go about rebarreling the rifle? Should I do it? What's the cost for the tools to do? Should I hire someone to do it? If so, who? What does it typically cost? Is there a preferred shipping company, or maybe a required company because it's a firearm? |

If you are going to do one and done its not worth buying the tools. Its a fairly easy process. Chuck the barrel into a vice, use the receiver wrench to unscrew the receiver, and Install a new one. Timing is the pain. I place a degree level on rear sight cutout and take a measurement, then install the front gas cylinder and take a measurement. |

| The way the CMP armorers' course had us do it was to place a 12-18" rod through the rear sight and another one on top of the gas cylinder flat. Then turn the receiver till the two are parallel to each other. Was extremely easy compared to what I imagined had to be done. |

I searched the CMP web site and finally found their shop services and price list. I looked this morning, and looked, and looked but did not find it. Now I have. Link to CMP Services web site. |

I replaced the Rack Grade barrel a little over ten years back. Huge difference in accuracy over the old barrel with excessive TE and ME readings. Borrowed the barrel clamp and used a giant crescent wrench from Harbor Freight. Rented a "Pull-Through" reamer and rod from ReamerRentals dot com. In the end it was only a few dollars cheaper than sending it out to CMP at the time. But, it was way cheaper than Fulton Armory or some other shops. CMP was reasonably priced at the time. I don't know if their prices are still relatively cheap since they seem to focus on profit now and prices are pretty high on their Garands.

I added a link to the CMP web site, above. I shouldn't lose it that way. Here's what they say about rebarreling. CMP Item #CS165 - $95. Basic barrel Installation and Headspace (Price shown is for labor only and does not include the cost of the barrel. See CMP Custom Shop Inventory list for current barrels available.) This service includes the removal of the old barrel and installation of a new barrel. The chamber will be finish reamed to give proper headspace within military specifications. Applicable for standard length, contour, 308 and 30-06 barrels. The take off barrel will be returned unless directed otherwise. Used GI barrels can also be installed but due to high headspace failure rate, fee will apply whether successful or not. Barrels in .308 will require the purchase of our nylon filler block spacer(item number NLU PC008). |

To rebarrel, you spin the old off, spin the new to index and then finish ream chamber with a pull through reamer. If you mechanically inclined you can figure it out. Some people, like myself, rather learn to do it themselves than have other working on their rifles. Cost of the tools will run $400-$450. You could buy the tools then sell them after. In that case, net cost would be much lower, $100-$150. It only make sense to have others replace it if you only plan to ever change one. CMP has been mentioned but you will be waiting a long time for no better work than others can do more timely. Jeremy Cheek from Countryside Gunsmithing has good reviews here replacing M1 barrels with fast turn around. Cost is around $100 to swap a M1 barrel. Locally a guy does it for $50. M1 barrel receivers ship easily USPS. Other shippers are more restrictive. |
