I am assembling an AR-type lower and the pivot pin lugs seem undersized. I tried tapping the pin in, heavily oiled, and it only goes so far. I've tried several pins, and they're all tight.
Any issues with using a .250 HSS hand reamer to open the holes up? Any tips or advice. The lower is supposedly hard anodized. |

If you can lap it you'll be better off, IMHO lapping compund on the pin and drive it through? wouldn't that wear the pin also? the hole seems signifcantly undersized. I am afraid of getting it stuck and having to pound it out. That already happened, and I was afraid I was going to knock the lug off, I had to hit it so hard. |

First, I would measure the pin to be certain the hole is undersize. If the hole is the problem, get a drill bit that is just loose in the hole and put lapping compound on the shank to lap the hole. Continue to lap until the pin fits. You may have to then go up a size on the bit––or not. This is how I have approached similar problems in the past. |

Thanks for the ideas.
This is an older AR45 lower from years ago that was finished by Khalan weaponry, and after reading through the AR45 forum, undersized pivot pin holes were a common issue with the run my lower came from. It's properly located, just too small, and several folks fixed theirs by using a drill bit by hand. I have a .250 hand reamer, so I'm going to give that a try. I had written this thing off due to the problems others were having with them, but everything else in the lower fit together fine. Wish me luck, lol! |

I would not try to re-size it with any drill bit. |

That's why I use a .251 and a .376. Quoted:
I've always thought that the best thing to do is modify the cheaper part. In this case the pin. Normally I'd agree, but resizing one of those pins would be a pain in the ass. And it would leave you with a non standard part- another no-no. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
