I have a fair number of sbs but they are in the 14” range. I’ve gotten the itch to go shorter just for fun. Either looking at a surbu super shorty or a side by side to cut down. Recently I stumbled across the Charles Daly Triple Crown, a 3 barreled shot gun. Now I’m leaning in that direction. Has anyone cut down one of these??   AI rendering of what I’m thinking about  |

The triple is very unique. Take it to the range and everyone will come to see what you've got. They will walk past the the standard fair with all the bolt on stuff to admire your piece. If the entry price doesn't scare you away, and you want something very unique, go for it. Make it your own, a one of a kind. Don't think you'll ever regret it. The Empire Grade Triple Crown examples approach $4,000 and beyond. I have a unique piece myself. A Rogak P-18. A poor unlicensed copy of the Styer GB, which was a very good pistol. The Rogak was made in Morton Grove, Illinois. Known to have fudged serial numbers of greater numbers than actually produced. My SN is a 2300 number but it is believed that less than 1000 were ever produced. 18 in the mag with one in the pipe. Remember, this is in the late 70's. A military designed to begin with. It was known as "The Ultimate Fodder Feeder" 19 rounds pretty much unheard of back then. Delayed gas blowback design that didn't work like the Steyr which worked very well. A fixed barrel. So it's just a blowback pistol but it does that quite well. Never an issue with it. MSRP around $500. It's a cool piece of history from the late 70's. Poor manufacturing, made in the first city in America to ban sale of and posession of handguns in 1981. It would go pretty well in a forgotten weapons collection or general pistol collection. |

Been looking for a Stevens 311 in 20ga for a while now, but the 20s are hard to find and more expensive when you do. If I find a used or inexpensive (relatively speaking) double trigger Stoeger Coach gun I'll probably buy that. Buying a double then having it cut and both barrels threaded and a set of sights installed isn't as cheap as some of the myriad other projects on my long list of dumb ideas and things I don't need and shouldn't be spending money on (which knocks it down to the bottom of my list of stupid ideas). My uncle swapped me a 12ga Baikal over/under for a scope I wasn't using (I came out ahead, he just didn't like the gun and didn't want it anymore) and I had thought about chopping it, but for whatever reason I have it in my head that I want a side by side. I've never really cared for OU shotguns, probably too many westerns growing up (and I want a 20ga, not 12).

Serious question, I've never shot one but I've heard a lot of SASS/cowboy shooting guys use them. I'm just looking for one that's inexpensive, double triggers, ejectors* and 20ga; I seriously doubt it'll got shot much, just something I've always wanted. Obviously I've prefer the Stevens, just haven't been able to find one- and the ones that pop up on gunbroker are expensive and they always want a fortune to ship. As I said, I've got way too many other projects costing me money at the moment, including a minibike I want to mod  , so this is near the bottom of the current list.The Baikal is honestly in decent shape for what it is and believe it or not, there seem to be people who actually want factory models for some reason (no idea why). It looks like, if I could find a buyer, I should sell it for about $400 which I could put towards a Stevens, if I could find one, or some other double. I just really don't care for the Baikal, or over/unders (I have or have owned SxSs and am comfortable with them, and don't feel like putting the money and work into chopping it. In my experience with cutting shotguns, they need to be threaded for tubes to actually be useful and, in my extremely limited experience with cutting doubles, they need more work to ensure that the barrels don't separate afterwards. *I double checked and apparently I'm wrong, I thought they offered models with ejectors and extractors, it appears they are extractor only. That kinda rules that out... |
