My brother in law is giving me his Rock Chucker, which he previously used to load .308 and 45's.  He now uses a Dillon 550 machine, which I have been using as well.  He lives about 45 miles away, so the benefits of being able to do some of the case prep at home are becoming evident.  I'd like to set up the RCBS machine to remove primers and size my cases (as the Dillon 550 had been doing for me in the first stage).  I need to change the die to one compatible with .223.  Is this the proper die?  I've been reading a lot here and am very grateful for the info!

yes that will work. Remember to use case lube when sizing. Also remember your going to need to be able to trim and swage the primer pockets if needed as well

That'll work for your stated purpose.

If it were me, I'd spend the extra ~$5 or so and get the two die set from any of the major manufacturers. So if you want to reload later on your own, you'll be able to with one less thing to buy.

I prefer the Hornady seating die, and thus would get the Hornady set, but asking which brand of dies is the "best" is a REAL loaded question.  Redding dies are generally considered in high regard, but are a bit more spendy.

As a bonus, if you get the Hornady dies, they'll send you 100 bullets for the cost of postage.

Also, dont forget that you'll need a specific shell holder for the .223 cartride on the Rockchucker.

And any of the major brands of dies will work in your Rockchucker. I have one and use Hornady, Redding and RCBS dies in it.

Good luck!

That die will work. But a 2 die set is only a few dollars more. Many to choose from, small base, taper crimp, roll crimp. http://www.midwayusa.com/find?sortby=1&itemsperpage=20&dimensionids=4294846302&newcategorydimensionid=11931&

Thanks for the info and feedback!  I really can't see doing more than this step with the Rock Chucker, especially after being spoiled by a 550.  Thanks for the tips on the case prep as well.  I've been doing a little of this already (had to open up the primer pockets on the 850 and PMC Xtac to be able to reload it) and am learning as I go.  I will say that the first 300-400 rounds that I've loaded have been significantly more accurate than any factory ammo that I've tried, and I have had no feeding or firing issues whatsoever.  I'm putting together the pieces to build a tumbler (idea courtesy of the Bigdawg), and am hoping to be able to walk into by BIL's house with clean, empty cases ready to go.  Thanks again!

It's nice to be able to load at your own place even if it is slower versus a 45 mile drive at today's gas prices.    And you can do it in your boxers (do close the blinds).

I also suggest buying a 2 die set; Redding, RCBS, or Hornady,  they're all good.  FL set, not neck, not SB (small base).
