Are USGI SAPI plates stand alone protection, or do they require soft armor to back them up?

any time you run hard plates, it is a GOOD idea to wear some sort of softarmor underneath to mitigate spalling, or to further dissipate the blunt force of the armor strike.

I understand that. I just want to know if they are adequate protection on their own or if there will be spalling.
