Do you wear your soft shell clothing directly over your underwear or longjohns, or do you also wear shirt and trousers?

Also: most soft shell jackets don't include a built in hood...so what type of headgear do you wear to keep your noggin dry?

It is safe to say it depends. I would layer based on conditions and activity. I do not consider soft shells rain gear, so a wool watch cap is what I keep in a pocket of the soft shell. It is becoming easier to find jackets with hoods, but I would still continue to carry a wool cap.

Something similar to the TAD photo.

If you do not view soft shells as rain gear, how would you classify them then? As a cold weather layer?

I classify them as a Cool/Cold weather, wind resistant, water resistant(not waterproof) layering item.

Softshells are just that.  They are your oeter layer when it's not actually raining.  They are like an insulated water repellant windbreaker.

Think of Softshells as a way to bridge the gap in the seasons.

Early Spring and Late Fall they earn their keep.

What I was getting at was sizeing.

If they are meant as a layering outerlayer, and you wear size Large clothing, would you want your soft shell in Large, or in Extra Large so you can have a regular shirt and trouser underneath?

I have a few that have a soft lining and I have at times wore nothing under-them and have been comfortable.

they work 75% of the time all the time

Ah, I see.  I'd imagine that htey are sized to fit over the base and insulating layers, so they'd be big enough.  BUT you'll want to try them on with the layers you expect to be wearing.  And like everything else, every company probably makes theirs a little different.

I wear my softshells true to size. I rarely layer them with something bulky because i only wear softshells when i expect serious aerobic activity and insulation isn't needed. Most softshells will have a bit of stretch to go over light insulation (light fleece, cotton) anyway.
