| Looking to get a .2 bolt gun for my Gemtech. It's between a Savage MKII and the CZ452 with the threaded 16" barrel. A local dealer said he gets $110 to get his guy to thread a barrel if I go with the Savage. I forgot to ask about getting it chopped to 16" though. For the guys that thread, do you charge any extra to cut a barrel to length if you are going to thread it? The price on the CZ is $389 and a Savage with a lam stock is probably about $230. I'm just trying to figure out the price gap between the two after I factor in getting the Savage cropped and threaded. The CZ would still need the $35 thread adapter though. Thanks for any input on the two rifles or any other suggestions for a .22 bolt gun. |

Many smiths will charge a little extra for cutting & recrowning, primarily because of the time or the mechanical set-up differences. When you look at a thread adapter, there is always the potential for compounding alignment issues. Most manufacturers will agree that one set of threads is better than 2 or 3. |
| Will Gemtech do it? Have you got a price from them? I have only dealt with YHM, but I know they will do it and the price last years was very reasonable. I don't know of anyone who does charge a little extra for crowning a cut barrell. If you take it to a machine shop you can probaly get it chopped and threaded on one setup of the lathe, but the crown will still need to be finished... |
| I agree that less threading variables is better, but I haven't heard alot bad about the CZ setup. Of course I would check to see that everything lines up ahead of time, but in any case Phil, what would you guys charge to cut a few inches of barrel off, crown and thread something like this? Thanks |
You would have to buy the regular 452 American if you wanted to get it threaded 1/2x28. The model I was talking about getting cut and threaded was the Savage. |
