What is the proper way and critical points to lube and critical points not to lube on the FAL. Also which is preferred oil or grease?
Thanks |

Although M14s and M1s get grease, I just use oil on FALs and ARs. For FALs I recommend putting a healthy drop of oil on all the shiny spots on the bolt and inside the bolt carrier, then one drop on the flat bottom of the bolt carrier and a drop on the top of its rails. Drop the bolt and bolt carrier down into the receiver, and you've now lubricated the receiver rails. All done. Check out Tetra oil; it doesn't evaporate and it's viscous enough not to drain out over time.
Actually, the bit about not using grease isn't entirely correct. I do use a bit of bearing grease on the trigger components where they slide against each other––but not where the hammer and sear come together. Also some grease in the buttstock spring tube. |

The FAL / LAR manuals I have (FN, Browning and Imbel, plus Century's, which is a copy of FN's) all specify oil. Grease is not mentioned at all.
The points to oil and leave dry are identical across these manuals, as expected. OIL: Inner surface of breech block slide (aka bolt carrier) Breech block (aka bolt) at locking shoulders Body (aka receiver), at bottom and along guide grooves for slide Bolt hold open LEAVE DRY: Barrel and chamber Gas cylinder and gas plug Piston and spring Outer surface of slide (bolt carrier) Front surface of breech block (bolt) Magazine catch Magazine and platform (follower) Sights |

As instructed in basic lightly oil the rails on the bolt carrier and the shoulders of the bolt and thats it for normal operation. For wet conditions light coating on bolt carrier and bolt to ward off rust. storage light coating of oil pull through with oiled 4X2 lightly oil gas parts.
issue oil resembled 3 in 1 oil and probably was. |
